Matchmaking: Funders and Fundees on Technology-Based Projects

1. TIIAP & BrookLynX
BrookLynX, a community-based, online information network, was founded in 1997 by The Fund for the Borough of Brooklyn, Inc., to help Brooklyn communities establish a presence on the World Wide Web by adding Internet access to neighborhood computer training centers, offering free Internet training and web publishing classes, and providing technical support to local organizations wishing to broaden their constituencies. BrookLynX also maintains www.brooklynx.org to provide information about civic, community and cultural resources in Brooklyn neighborhoods. BrookLynX is funded by TIIAP (Telecommunications and Information Infrastructure Assistance Program), a program of the US Department of Commerce. TIIAP provides matching grants to non-profit organizations for projects that improve the quality of, and the public’s access to, community-based services. Grants are used to purchase equipment such as computers, video conferencing systems, network routers, telephones, software, training, and communications services. Nanette Rainone, President of The Fund for the Borough of Brooklyn, Inc., and Elizabeth Cahill, Internet Project Manager of BrookLynX, are joined by Debby Silverfine of NYSCA settping in for Don Druker, BrookLynX’s grant officer at TIIAP, who was unable to attend the conference due to illness.
