    The Kamiyama Artist-in-Residence (KAIR) Program

The Executive Committee of Kamiyama Artist-in-Residence in Japan is now open for accepting applications for year 2003. Please click on the following link for information on how you can apply for KAIR2003. The Kamiyama Artist-in-Residence (KAIR) Program was established in 1999 to invite and provide artists with the unique opportunity to concentrate on their work in a supportive, communal environment:

"Creating 'Kamiyama International Village of Humanities and Arts' is the main purpose behind the KAIR Project. The community is searching for an artist who looks to the future and at the same time can appreciate the beauty of the Japanese countryside. The purpose of this project is to invite someone who can work not only in the field of art but through dialogue and art work can help the local residents make new discoveries, have a new appreciation for art, and learn about culturally related ideas. The committee is looking for an artist whose personal contact with the "tangible and intangible Kamiyama Town" will be expressed in his/her art and noticeable in his/her conversations with residents. In other words, the desire is for an artist who can impact on the community.

    CALL FOR ENTRIES

    Deadline NOVEMBER 30, 2002
    Entry is FREE
Entry form and further details http://www.usc.edu/aim Contact aim@usc.edu

    THE AIM FESTIVAL
AIM, the University of Southern California School of Fine Arts international festival of time-based media, in partnership with the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, is pleased to announce AIM IV Interference Patterns. Focusing on the proliferating spaces in which humans and non-human technologies intersect, Interference Patterns addresses the ways in which our interface apparatus and metaphors transform the communications they mediate.

Considering the interface as the point of separation and connection where machine and human are linked, AIM IV Interference Patterns calls for entries that broach both the actual operations of media and communications technologies in contemporary society and explore the ways in which the hybrid networks developing between human and non-human may introduce an alterity or otherness of which we have yet to conceive. AIM IV will take place February 15 April 13, 2003 and comprise the Interference Patterns exhibition at the Armory Center for the Arts, panel discussions on the USC campus, and satellite events throughout the Los Angeles area.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA Works must be 'time-based' and address the festival theme (however obliquely). Works may be submitted by professionals and students of any age working in any discipline. AIM defines 'time-based' to include Internet-based projects such as websites, collaborative networks, and technologies for spatializing information; hardware design; architectural and urban design projects which centralize the problematics of digital time, duration, and their multiple mediations, at the scale of habitable space; digital media such as CD-ROMs and DVDs; performative, installation, and augmented reality projects; video, digital video, hand-drawn and digital animation; interactive computer games; and sound pieces, - as well as various emerging hybrids that elude traditional categorization. All submitted works must be completed after September 1, 2000, and entries must be postmarked no later than November 30, 2002.

Submission to AIM is free. Submit proposals and/or copies of projects (no originals please) in the form of a DVD, VCD, VHS (NTSC), Macintosh CD-ROM, or a URL, as appropriate. Other formats can be accommodated by prior arrangement with AIM. Entry form below, and located at http://www.usc.edu/aim

New York artists and writers - graphics, photography, texts on "Urban culture in New York City"
    ARTOARTE

Call for entries for zine publication ARTOARTE. This zine was born in Lima, Peru as an underground publication. It was a space for the discussion of art issues which were not dealt with in any other publication, and a space for artists which were too edgy or non-commercial for mainstream galleries. It began as a photocopy production and gradually became more graphic, until it reached its present art-object state.

The founder and editor of this publication is now based in New York and is looking to publish Issue # 8 with collaborations from New York based artists.

The idea is to keep developing the project into an art-object product, i.e. less text and more visual. The topic of the last issue was the artist's response to the political unrest in Peru, due to the corrupt dictatorial government the country was going through. The topic for the next issue will be `Urban culture in New York City' (this will not be the title of the issue, just the topic to work from), to be interpreted in any way you wish (Comic, drawing, photography, text, object, etc.). I am interested in the way New York based artists perceive and understand the city and its culture. Does NYC have urban tribes? How does multiculturalism affect you? Is there Hip-Hop visual art? What do you do when you're in a subway? What's the underground scene in NYC about? These are some of the questions that pop in my mind, you probably have your own.

The project includes a CD as part of this next issue. The band/s to be included are still to be discussed.

You can check ARTOARTE in the New Museum of Contemporary Art and Printed Matter in Manhattan and Clovis Press in Williamsburg, or you can send an e-mail to the address below requesting a copy. If you are interested in participating in this ipublication and have something to say on the topic, please contact this e-mail artoartezine@hotmail.com for more details.

    Deadline: November 15, 2002

TEACHERS & WRITERS Magazine, the award-winning literary and educational bimonthly, is seeking essays and articles for two new series.

    The Literary Anatomy

In this series, we will publish articles that offer an unusual approach to the teaching (and understanding) of a specific a literary form, genre, or device. The articles should include a concise but compelling history of the given form/genre/device and a unique method of teaching it to students of any age-range. Possible subjects might include the prose poem, the short-short story, the bildungsroman, the villanelle, the ghazal, and the novel-in-verse. Length 1500-3000 words.

    Passwords

In this series, we will publish essays that offer an unexpected approach to a specific author and that culminate with a writing exercise that translates that approach into action. We are particularly interested in concise, intellectually stimulating articles on authors who may not traditionally be taught in the public school curriculum. Possible subjects might include Sherwood Anderson, Fernando Pessoa, Zora Neale Hurston, Jose Saramago, W. G. Sebald, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Christopher Smart, Sarah Orne Jewett, Robert Duncan, Jean Toomer, and Mina Loy. Length 1500-3000 words.

    Fiction and poetry
    LEGIBLE Open competition

The 2nd LEGIBLE Open competition seeks fiction and poetry for publication in book, chapbook, or downloadable form. Quality of writing is the only criterion.

LEGIBLE is interested in the fiction and poetry of new and established authors alike. Send your best work vivid, penetrating, uniquely of your making.

Work must be in English, but authors do not have to be from the United States.

Criticism, nonfiction (including essays and memoirs), plays and screenplays are not sought at this time.

For the first time, manuscripts will be accepted via email as well as by mail, UPS, or Federal Express. Go to the LEGIBLE website for email submission instructions.

    DEADLINE
All materials are due by February 28, 2003. Have pity for the poor reader and try to send in mss. early.

    FICTION
Submit a short story or stories taken from a completed collection; or a portion of a completed novel. Approximately 5,000 words or 20 pages, double- or 1.5-line-spaced. Pages must be consecutively numbered. The length of a novel or collection to be published is not as important as the quality of the work as an entity better to publish a superb short novel or collection than one padded or puffed.

    POETRY
Submit a poem or an excerpt of a poem or multiple poems, in the typographic format you prefer (double-spaced, 1.5-line-spaced, strewn), 15 pages total or less. On the cover page, estimate how many pages in a similar typographic format your book or chapbook would come to.

    SEND MATERIALS TO
    LEGIBLE
    c/o Michael Rosenthal
    416 East 9th Street, #10
    New York, NY 10009

All submissions should be enclosed in an envelope clearly marked with the manuscript category (Fiction, Poetry).

Manuscripts should be clean copies on 8.5" x 11" paper, typed or computer-printed; photocopies are OK. Every page should be headed with your name and the title of the work.

    Include with your manuscript

    PUBLICATION
This is still an experimental venture. No promises can be made of compensation, monetary or otherwise, for accepted work. The current options for publishing and printing are fluid and the best format in which to present LEGIBLE work is not finalized. It is hoped that published work will be made available as a perfect-bound paperback book as well as a less expensive download. LEGIBLE hopes to share money and glory with all, many, or some. AUTHORS WILL NOT BE ASKED TO SUBSIDIZE THE COST OF PUBLISHING ANY BOOK. Authors may be asked to defer profits until costs for publicity and advertising are recouped, or, indeed, to participate in costs of advertising and publicity. (As of fall 2002, no author has been asked for any money.)

The point of LEGIBLE is to bring the work of good writers to the attention of good readers.

    LEGIBLE home is http://www.geocities.com/legible5roses

Email legible5roses@yahoo.com with any further questions.

Composers in the early stages of their careers
ACO Whitaker New Music Readings Sessions and Commission

"Writing for the symphony orchestra remains one of the supreme challenges for the aspiring composer. The subtleties of instrumental balance, timbre, effective part preparation, and communication with conductor and musicians are critical skills. But openings for composers to gain hands-on experience working with a professional orchestra are few. ACO's Whitaker New Music Reading Sessions are designed to give emerging composers the opportunity to work with an orchestra singular in its commitment to the development of the American composer and to hear their work performed by some of the country's most outstanding contemporary music instrumentalists."

The American Composers Orchestra (ACO) has announced its 12th annual Whitaker New Music Readings Sessions and Commission. Up to eight composers in the early stages of their careers will be selected to participate. One will be awarded a $15,000 commission to write a new work to be performed by ACO at Carnegie Hall. The Reading Sessions are led by Music Director Steven Sloane and Artistic Director Robert Beaser, and will be held on April 7 & 8, 2003 in New York City.

Only works which will not have been performed or read by a professional orchestra, nor received a public performance in the New York metropolitan area prior to the reading date are eligible. Works must be completed after January 1, 1998 and must be less than fifteen minutes in length. A portion or movement from a longer work may also be considered.

The application deadline is November 15, 2002. The submission form, guidelines, and additional information are available at http://www.americancomposers.org/

    Poetry Anthology on 9/11

Clive Matson and I are editing a poetry anthology on 9/11 to be published just before the 1st anniv. by Regent Press in Oakland, CA. We would appreciate receiving submissions of poems on the event or subsequent reflections on it. Please email this to your list and announce at readings.

Poems should be emailed to sforacle@prodigy.net as attached .doc files and as .txt files in body of email.

There isn't an absolute limit on length but three or four pages would be long enough and published works would be acceptable.

We think that a record of poet's responses and reflections is important for the historical record. Though there was some good journalism about 9/11 the overwhelming propaganda has created a din of collective madness. It is important for the world to hear the voice of its poets.

    About Gallery 825/LAAA & Video 825

Committed to exhibiting, rewarding and promoting fresh artistic visions as well as affording the public unprecedented access to all forms of media, in June 2001 Gallery 825/LAAA launched Video 825, a program created to ensure that video artists have the same opportunity as fine artists to show their work. In its short existence, Video 825 has become a highly recognized program throughout Los Angeles and has received critical acclaim. Video 825 programs cover a wide spectrum of sensibilities and emphasis and do not favor a particular style or content. From the serious to the serene, compelling to the ridiculous, political to the poetic, each month Video 825 provides a venue to distinctive artistic voices.

Video 825 programs have included an evening with artist Paul McCarthy, artist interviews from www.netropolitan.org - "Museum Without Walls", founded by Lyn Kienholz; Jayce Salloum's " 'everything and nothing', an intimate dialogue with Soha Bechara, an ex-Lebanese National Resistance fighter after release from captivity in a Southern Lebanese torture and interrogation center; "Self Reflexive", a collection of videos in which the video artist is also the performer.

All video artists are welcome to submit short and feature length video work and/or proposals for group and solo-artist video screenings. For more information on Video 825 and Gallery 825/LAAA's programs visit http://www.laaa.org

Site-specific public art commission for the EdVenture Children s Museum in Columbia, South Carolina

Coordinated through the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties

EDVENTURE CHILDREN S MUSEUM SEEKING PUBLIC ART SUBMISSIONS

The Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties is calling for an artist, or team of artists, for a site-specific public art commission for the EdVenture Children s Museum in Columbia, South Carolina. The museum has been designed and is currently under construction. The total budget for a permanent exterior piece of art is $50,000, which includes all expenses of the artist(s), as well as any and all installation expenses, including any electrical and/or mechanical requirements.

The Public Art Selection Committee is looking for an artist(s) to bring a creative, interactive and stimulating experience to the building that speaks to children and families alike. Sculpture and kinetic designs are encouraged, including those that incorporate water. Since this is an outdoor piece, the work must be suitably constructed of durable, appropriate materials that can withstand weather and aging with minimal maintenance requirements.

The building will be three stories, 65,000 square feet, and be located at 211 Gervais Street in front of the South Carolina State Museum. The EdVenture Museum will sit on the banks of the Congaree River, with a scenic view of both the river and the city s skyline. EdVenture s target audience is children ages 12 and younger and an attendance is expected to be more than 300,000 visitors annually. The museum focuses on five interdisciplinary themes in its educational mission health and the human body, communities and commerce, imagination and communication, environmental science, and international cultures. The placement of the commissioned sculpture is adjacent to the main entrance and its goal is to spark the imagination of the young visitors.

To be considered for this project, applicants must submit up to ten slides of previously completed artworks, artist resume, project proposal and renderings. Artists who wish to submit kinetic works should also include a VHS videocassette.

    WBUR Internet-based event calendars

The Massachusetts Cultural Council is pleased to announce a new opportunity for artists to promote their work!

National public radio affiliate WBUR has plans to develop one of the state's most comprehensive, Internet-based event calendars. All Massachusetts artists are invited to enter their performances, readings, exhibits, lectures, etc. at http://events.publicbroadcasting.net/wbur/events.eventsmain?action=sub- mitEvent

When you submit your event to this free calendar, you will be adding your presence to one of the area's most-visited web sites. WBUR plans to promote the event calendar and its arts and culture page twice a day on the air.

You should make this entry one of the elements in overall promotion and marketing strategies for your events. Also be sure to check out other media calendar opportunities in your area.

The site is planned for a public launch in February, so add as many of your events as you'd like, dated from late February forward. Once the calendar is launched to the public, anyone with an Internet connection and a desire to "get culture" can log on to http;//www.wbur.org and search by region, by date or by type of activity, to find arts and culture activities in their neighborhood and across the state.

We welcome your feedback on any aspect of the calendar and will forward suggestions to WBUR. The site will continue to develop over the next few months. We look forward to announcing more exciting collaborations and projects over the next several months to help promote the wonderful cultural treasures throughout the Commonwealth.

women writers in all genres of writing, to help lead monthly workshops and mentor teenage girls who are interested in pursuing careers in writing
Girls Write Now, new Los Angeles branch

Girls Write Now, a non-profit organization, is looking for women writers in all genres of writing, to help lead monthly workshops and mentor teenage girls who are interested in pursuing careers in writing, or would just like to advance their writing skills. Whether you were lucky enough to have good mentors as a teenager, or struggled through on your own, we would like to invite you to join us to help give teenage girls some tools for expression at this critical time in their lives.

Girls Write Now has been running for more than three years in New York City, and we are preparing to launch the Los Angeles branch in January 2002. Thanks to the generosity of the Bresee Community Center, (Vermont and 2nd Street), we will have access to a beautiful new facility for our monthly workshops, and assistance in promoting the program to girls in the area.

We hold workshops once each month on a Saturday, focusing on a specific writing genre, which mentors help organize and lead, including poetry, songwriting, screenwriting, fiction, journalism and more. You will be assigned a teenage girl, for one-on-one writing coaching, based on mutual interests. Knowing how busy we all are, weekly mentoring can be by email, telephone or in person, as your own schedule permits. We do ask that you commit to being consistent in your communication with your mentee weekly, and in attending monthly workshops. Also, we run as a collective, with all mentors volunteering to take on some organizational responsibilities.

You can find more information on our New York branch at http://www.girlswritenow.org

If you decide you are definitely interested, please send two writing samples, preferably in two different genres, to gwnla@onebox.com

We will be holding an introductory meeting mid-December, and an orientation mid-January.

Some comments from Girls Write Now New York participants

"The group was cool; I can't wait until the next. Thanks to whoever made Girls Write Now. It should be all over the world for girls like us."

"I am actually very happy that I was able to make today's workshop. I'm involved in a learning experience that will not only benefit me, but other people who will be reading my stories and other writings. I also made a supercool friend."

"I am excited about this new community of creative women."

Scholars, teachers and composers - new materials
    The American Gamelan Institute Archives

    CALL FOR NEW ARCHIVES ADDITIONS

The American Gamelan Institute Archives strives to be a resource for players and scholars of gamelan and related arts. There is a research collection on site, and a "distribution collection" consisting of items we have permission to reproduce for a service fee. Available materials include monographs, master's theses, books of notation, CDs, videos, and scores for compositions. In the interest of documenting the art and development of gamelan and related traditions, the AGI Archives has an open policy for housing and distributing materials.

Recently, a library service in Singapore acquired most of the distribution collection. This will make the collection more easily availalble to insitutions and individuals in Asia.(Duplicates of the large collection now in preparation are also availalble for a substantial discount -- inquire for special library rates.)

Knowing that the community we will reach is growing, we would like to invite scholars, teachers and composers to submit new materials for distribution. These can be sent in paper, disk or electronic forms. Our goal is to make resources available that would otherwise be impossible to acquire, so materials easily available elsewhere need not be submitted. Submissions may be made at any time; royalties are paid for scores, and other items by arrangement.

Please join us in an expansion of the AGI Archives! We welcome comments, questions, submissions and suggestions, and look forward to working with current and new authors and composers.

a website functioning as a visual response to the events of 9/11/01.

In these times, art is of the utmost importance. Some of it will heal, some will provide hope, some will convey anger and some a political message. Art is one way of creating touchstones to the emotions that keep us human and our collective humanity alive.

theARTproject was launched to give work created in response to the events of 9/11 and its aftermath an audience. The site functions as a dialogue for those who react primarily with images as opposed to words. It is divided into two sections the exhibition and the discussions.

The exhibition consists of pages of thumbnails, from which you can view a larger version of each image with information of the artist's choosing.

An American Quilt - Mission Statement

In the aftermath of the events of September 11th, many of us have been searching for a way to pay our respects to the heroes of the disaster, memorialize those we have lost and express the hope we must hold onto for tomorrow. An American Quilt is one way to symbolize our strength and unity. The Quilt will become an icon and symbol of America's resolve to come together and memorialize those we have lost, to heal as a nation and to guard against and combat terrorism wherever it may be found.

Our not-for-profit organization, An American Quilt, Inc. is extending an invitation to families, friends and everyone affected to join us and stitch together America's resolve by creating memorial panels to be sewn together into a quilt of hope.

Our plan is to display The Quilt on July 4th, 2002, in Central Park on the Great Lawn, in Washington for the first-year anniversary of the event, and thereafter to have The Quilt tour nationally and internationally as a symbol of our unity as a people.

You can contribute to this grassroots effort and help create a memorial panel as a symbol of America's resolve to the events of and reactions to September 11th. We are currently creating a list of Artists who can volunteer to help those family members who want to make a panel but are uncertain as to how to go about it. We will buddy a volunteer artist with a family or group making a panel to work together. If you or anyone you know is interested in helping families and friends to create a panel - please visit our website http://www.anamericanquilt.com

and use the volunteer form or call us at 212. 358. 9988 for more information.

donations of small art or craft work, dedicated to the memory of someone who has lost their life in that attack to be offered for sale, to raise funds for families
    Tree of Life Project

"Artists are not usually on the front lines of military action, scientific frontiers or financial wizardry. Often we're considered a luxury only afforded by wealthy societies. Yet artists do stand on the front lines of humanity- we help mold the bricks of spirit, and build the spiritual houses of civilization. Creativity, imagination are the stuff of dreams and so of life itself, for as art stiffens the backbone of the quality of life, its' visionary nature moves it forward. Artists are many among the soldiers of hope and will forever be so.

At times like this, it would be easy to think art is by comparison unimportant. But creativity is a healing process, a life affirming process. It is precisely at times like these that art becomes of paramount importance.

With this in mind, we are inviting all artists and craftspeople to join the Tree of Life Project. You are asked to create and donate a small art or craft work, dedicated to the memory of someone who has lost their life in that attack. The only requirement is that the work incorporate a leaf and be inscribed with the name of a victim. These works will be offered for sale, to raise funds for families. There is a further hope- that artists will be moved to create two identical pieces. One to sell, one to give to the family or for possible future fundraising exhibitions. The Tree of Life project is more. It is a testament to the fact that tragedies of this scope are not, in the final analysis about governments, groups, or large abstract ideas. Tragedies are never faceless; they are always about ordinary people whose everyday extraordinary heroism puts kings and emperors to shame. Every one of those names now becomes a sacred trust, and must not be forgotten. It is the responsibility of artists today to bear witness, as generations of artists have always done.

This is a strictly volunteer project and we are proud to have an international group of artists already donating their work, time and money

There is a registration process. At that time each artist will be assigned a name to inscribe on his or her work. Registration fees will also be donated to the fund; the amount of the fee is up to the individual artist.

For many, their work will be their contribution. To join you must register first. Sadly, there are thousands of names- our goal is to have an artist for every single name. We now have a registered website, http://www.dollsforfreedom.com with a coordinating benefit auction begun by doll artists. High bidders for that auction will use links on the IDATS web site to donate directly to the one of several relief agencies.

If you would like to help us get this off the ground, to register as a participating artist, please contact us at http://treeoflife.dollsforfreedom.com

Jaraf will emphasize the specific potential of the medium of video, presenting the work of artists who are exploring the boundaries and possibilities of video for vital image-making. We are less concerned with experience and expertise than with bringing challenging works, by both more and less established artists, to light.

This series will also attempt to undo the polarization between the kinds of video works that are currently shown in gallery and festival settings and provide a continuous curatorial presence for new, rigorous works.

Please send samples of your work (VHS) for possible inclusion in this series. Include your name, telephone number, address, e-mail, as well as the name and duration of the piece(s).

We are currently seeking plays, screenplays, and pilots for the purposes of selecting our theatrical season. This is also the perfect opportunity for writers to develop, workshop, and possibly perform their new material. We are primarily a theatre company, and we also aim to bridge the gap between theatre and Hollywood. One of our goals is to have a regular screenplay reading series that is produced in conjunction with production houses, agencies, and studios. These readings will either be open to the public or a select group of investors.

The benefits of giving scripts a staged reading are clear for every party involved, especially for the writer's, directors, and production companies.

    please mail scripts to

    About us

We are the Vox Humana Theater Company, in residence at the Hudson Backstage Theater. We chose the name Vox Humana, latin for "the human voice", because it symbolizes our basic, fundamental unit of communication. Theater is the collaborative expression of many voices, through which we express our art and our humanity.

Our mission is to develop and perform new works for the stage. We are dedicated to helping the new voices of the theater -- actors, writers, directors, designers and musicians -- be heard. Vox Humana was formed to fill the need for high-quality new works on the Los Angeles stage. We want to provide a forum for all of the diverse voices that make up the artistic community of LA.

We are first and foremost a theater company; but we exist and seek to thrive in the city of Los Angeles. Therefore, it is our goal to have an active, symbiotic relationship with the Greater Hollywood community. We believe that theater can, and should, be a tool for developing new works for other media, especially film and television. We hope to accomplish this principally through staged readings of new material, and also by providing a safe space for experimentation, in which all artists can expand their creative boundaries.
