    The Kamiyama Artist-in-Residence (KAIR) Program

The Executive Committee of Kamiyama Artist-in-Residence in Japan is now open for accepting applications for year 2003. Please click on the following link for information on how you can apply for KAIR2003. The Kamiyama Artist-in-Residence (KAIR) Program was established in 1999 to invite and provide artists with the unique opportunity to concentrate on their work in a supportive, communal environment:

"Creating 'Kamiyama International Village of Humanities and Arts' is the main purpose behind the KAIR Project. The community is searching for an artist who looks to the future and at the same time can appreciate the beauty of the Japanese countryside. The purpose of this project is to invite someone who can work not only in the field of art but through dialogue and art work can help the local residents make new discoveries, have a new appreciation for art, and learn about culturally related ideas. The committee is looking for an artist whose personal contact with the "tangible and intangible Kamiyama Town" will be expressed in his/her art and noticeable in his/her conversations with residents. In other words, the desire is for an artist who can impact on the community.

    CALL FOR ENTRIES

    Deadline NOVEMBER 30, 2002
    Entry is FREE
Entry form and further details http://www.usc.edu/aim Contact aim@usc.edu

    THE AIM FESTIVAL
AIM, the University of Southern California School of Fine Arts international festival of time-based media, in partnership with the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, is pleased to announce AIM IV Interference Patterns. Focusing on the proliferating spaces in which humans and non-human technologies intersect, Interference Patterns addresses the ways in which our interface apparatus and metaphors transform the communications they mediate.

Considering the interface as the point of separation and connection where machine and human are linked, AIM IV Interference Patterns calls for entries that broach both the actual operations of media and communications technologies in contemporary society and explore the ways in which the hybrid networks developing between human and non-human may introduce an alterity or otherness of which we have yet to conceive. AIM IV will take place February 15 April 13, 2003 and comprise the Interference Patterns exhibition at the Armory Center for the Arts, panel discussions on the USC campus, and satellite events throughout the Los Angeles area.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA Works must be 'time-based' and address the festival theme (however obliquely). Works may be submitted by professionals and students of any age working in any discipline. AIM defines 'time-based' to include Internet-based projects such as websites, collaborative networks, and technologies for spatializing information; hardware design; architectural and urban design projects which centralize the problematics of digital time, duration, and their multiple mediations, at the scale of habitable space; digital media such as CD-ROMs and DVDs; performative, installation, and augmented reality projects; video, digital video, hand-drawn and digital animation; interactive computer games; and sound pieces, - as well as various emerging hybrids that elude traditional categorization. All submitted works must be completed after September 1, 2000, and entries must be postmarked no later than November 30, 2002.

Submission to AIM is free. Submit proposals and/or copies of projects (no originals please) in the form of a DVD, VCD, VHS (NTSC), Macintosh CD-ROM, or a URL, as appropriate. Other formats can be accommodated by prior arrangement with AIM. Entry form below, and located at http://www.usc.edu/aim

New York artists and writers - graphics, photography, texts on "Urban culture in New York City"
    ARTOARTE

Call for entries for zine publication ARTOARTE. This zine was born in Lima, Peru as an underground publication. It was a space for the discussion of art issues which were not dealt with in any other publication, and a space for artists which were too edgy or non-commercial for mainstream galleries. It began as a photocopy production and gradually became more graphic, until it reached its present art-object state.

The founder and editor of this publication is now based in New York and is looking to publish Issue # 8 with collaborations from New York based artists.

The idea is to keep developing the project into an art-object product, i.e. less text and more visual. The topic of the last issue was the artist's response to the political unrest in Peru, due to the corrupt dictatorial government the country was going through. The topic for the next issue will be `Urban culture in New York City' (this will not be the title of the issue, just the topic to work from), to be interpreted in any way you wish (Comic, drawing, photography, text, object, etc.). I am interested in the way New York based artists perceive and understand the city and its culture. Does NYC have urban tribes? How does multiculturalism affect you? Is there Hip-Hop visual art? What do you do when you're in a subway? What's the underground scene in NYC about? These are some of the questions that pop in my mind, you probably have your own.

The project includes a CD as part of this next issue. The band/s to be included are still to be discussed.

You can check ARTOARTE in the New Museum of Contemporary Art and Printed Matter in Manhattan and Clovis Press in Williamsburg, or you can send an e-mail to the address below requesting a copy. If you are interested in participating in this ipublication and have something to say on the topic, please contact this e-mail artoartezine@hotmail.com for more details.

    Deadline: November 15, 2002

TEACHERS & WRITERS Magazine, the award-winning literary and educational bimonthly, is seeking essays and articles for two new series.

    The Literary Anatomy

In this series, we will publish articles that offer an unusual approach to the teaching (and understanding) of a specific a literary form, genre, or device. The articles should include a concise but compelling history of the given form/genre/device and a unique method of teaching it to students of any age-range. Possible subjects might include the prose poem, the short-short story, the bildungsroman, the villanelle, the ghazal, and the novel-in-verse. Length 1500-3000 words.

    Passwords

In this series, we will publish essays that offer an unexpected approach to a specific author and that culminate with a writing exercise that translates that approach into action. We are particularly interested in concise, intellectually stimulating articles on authors who may not traditionally be taught in the public school curriculum. Possible subjects might include Sherwood Anderson, Fernando Pessoa, Zora Neale Hurston, Jose Saramago, W. G. Sebald, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Christopher Smart, Sarah Orne Jewett, Robert Duncan, Jean Toomer, and Mina Loy. Length 1500-3000 words.

    Fiction and poetry
    LEGIBLE Open competition

The 2nd LEGIBLE Open competition seeks fiction and poetry for publication in book, chapbook, or downloadable form. Quality of writing is the only criterion.

LEGIBLE is interested in the fiction and poetry of new and established authors alike. Send your best work vivid, penetrating, uniquely of your making.

Work must be in English, but authors do not have to be from the United States.

Criticism, nonfiction (including essays and memoirs), plays and screenplays are not sought at this time.

For the first time, manuscripts will be accepted via email as well as by mail, UPS, or Federal Express. Go to the LEGIBLE website for email submission instructions.

    DEADLINE
All materials are due by February 28, 2003. Have pity for the poor reader and try to send in mss. early.

    FICTION
Submit a short story or stories taken from a completed collection; or a portion of a completed novel. Approximately 5,000 words or 20 pages, double- or 1.5-line-spaced. Pages must be consecutively numbered. The length of a novel or collection to be published is not as important as the quality of the work as an entity better to publish a superb short novel or collection than one padded or puffed.

    POETRY
Submit a poem or an excerpt of a poem or multiple poems, in the typographic format you prefer (double-spaced, 1.5-line-spaced, strewn), 15 pages total or less. On the cover page, estimate how many pages in a similar typographic format your book or chapbook would come to.

    SEND MATERIALS TO
    LEGIBLE
    c/o Michael Rosenthal
    416 East 9th Street, #10
    New York, NY 10009

All submissions should be enclosed in an envelope clearly marked with the manuscript category (Fiction, Poetry).

Manuscripts should be clean copies on 8.5" x 11" paper, typed or computer-printed; photocopies are OK. Every page should be headed with your name and the title of the work.

    Include with your manuscript

    PUBLICATION
This is still an experimental venture. No promises can be made of compensation, monetary or otherwise, for accepted work. The current options for publishing and printing are fluid and the best format in which to present LEGIBLE work is not finalized. It is hoped that published work will be made available as a perfect-bound paperback book as well as a less expensive download. LEGIBLE hopes to share money and glory with all, many, or some. AUTHORS WILL NOT BE ASKED TO SUBSIDIZE THE COST OF PUBLISHING ANY BOOK. Authors may be asked to defer profits until costs for publicity and advertising are recouped, or, indeed, to participate in costs of advertising and publicity. (As of fall 2002, no author has been asked for any money.)

The point of LEGIBLE is to bring the work of good writers to the attention of good readers.

    LEGIBLE home is http://www.geocities.com/legible5roses

Email legible5roses@yahoo.com with any further questions.

Composers in the early stages of their careers
ACO Whitaker New Music Readings Sessions and Commission

"Writing for the symphony orchestra remains one of the supreme challenges for the aspiring composer. The subtleties of instrumental balance, timbre, effective part preparation, and communication with conductor and musicians are critical skills. But openings for composers to gain hands-on experience working with a professional orchestra are few. ACO's Whitaker New Music Reading Sessions are designed to give emerging composers the opportunity to work with an orchestra singular in its commitment to the development of the American composer and to hear their work performed by some of the country's most outstanding contemporary music instrumentalists."

The American Composers Orchestra (ACO) has announced its 12th annual Whitaker New Music Readings Sessions and Commission. Up to eight composers in the early stages of their careers will be selected to participate. One will be awarded a $15,000 commission to write a new work to be performed by ACO at Carnegie Hall. The Reading Sessions are led by Music Director Steven Sloane and Artistic Director Robert Beaser, and will be held on April 7 & 8, 2003 in New York City.

Only works which will not have been performed or read by a professional orchestra, nor received a public performance in the New York metropolitan area prior to the reading date are eligible. Works must be completed after January 1, 1998 and must be less than fifteen minutes in length. A portion or movement from a longer work may also be considered.

The application deadline is November 15, 2002. The submission form, guidelines, and additional information are available at http://www.americancomposers.org/

    Poetry Anthology on 9/11

Clive Matson and I are editing a poetry anthology on 9/11 to be published just before the 1st anniv. by Regent Press in Oakland, CA. We would appreciate receiving submissions of poems on the event or subsequent reflections on it. Please email this to your list and announce at readings.

Poems should be emailed to sforacle@prodigy.net as attached .doc files and as .txt files in body of email.

There isn't an absolute limit on length but three or four pages would be long enough and published works would be acceptable.

We think that a record of poet's responses and reflections is important for the historical record. Though there was some good journalism about 9/11 the overwhelming propaganda has created a din of collective madness. It is important for the world to hear the voice of its poets.
