Ongoing Emergency Programs for Artists

Hurricane Katrina Arts Relief Efforts

ALL DISCIPLINES
Louisiana State University’s Swine Palace Productions has started
Artists Unite in Hurricane Relief, an organization in support of artists who are working to bring relief to hurricane victims. Their site offers links and information on ways to help.

The Southern Arts Federation is accepting donations for victims of Hurricane Katrina. A PDF donation form appears on their site @ http://www.southarts.org/download/EmergencyReliefFund.pdf.

Alternate Roots' Focused Funding program is providing support to ROOTS artists and artists from the affected areas who are organizing workshops for members of displaced Gulf Coast communities to address trauma, feed the soul, and support efforts for channeling anger and desperation into constructive self-determination through community arts projects with shelters, evacuee centers, and community organizations.

Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) in New York has created a special program to assist artists and arts organizations affected by Hurricane Katrina. Through the project, VLA is offering its programs and services while waiving all of its fees and income requirements that typically apply to pro bono representation through VLA. VLA hopes to assist members of the arts community that come to New York from areas affected by Katrina with contracts, bankruptcy, copyright, arts related insurance, and real estate questions among other arts related issues. VLA invites all artists and arts organizations interested in accessing our services, and attorneys interested in volunteering with Project Katrina to contact VLA Director of Legal Services, Alexei Auld at (212) 319-2787 x12 or aauld@vlany.org.

NYFA, which organized the New York Arts Recovery Fund following 9/11, is interested in getting in touch with artists who have been directly affected by Hurricane Katrina. If you have been affected (or someone you know), please provide your name, current contact information (address, phone, email), your discipline and current status to our NYFA Source staff.

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) offers a temporary residency program in Lower Manhattan for 12-15 artists displaced by Hurricane Katrina. LMCC recognizes the importance of giving artists space to work and time to reflect during periods of recovery. On September 11, they lost our residency program on the 91st and 92nd floors of World Trade Center Tower One. Michael Richards, a resident artist who was working in his studio on the morning of September 11, was killed in the attack. Thanks to the generosity and support of the arts and real estate communities, LMCC was able to relocate the program, allowing resident artists to continue their work.

In response to the devastation left in the wake of hurricane Katrina, the Santa Fe Art Institute has reestablished its Emergency Respite Residency for Gulf Coast artists. The Institute is making available its facility in Santa Fe for artists, writers and crafts people who lost homes, studios, art work, jobs. The program will provide living space, studios, basic foods and some transportation support to artists whose lives were compromised by the hurricane. Each residency lasts from 1-3 months with space for 4-6 artists at a time. The Institute's first Emergency Respite Residency was created immediately after 9/11 for New York artists and more than 130 painters, sculptors, photographers, environmental artists, filmmakers and writers came to Santa Fe. Artists wishing to come to Santa Fe and individuals wishing to contribute to this program can contact The Santa Fe Art Institute, telephone 505.424.5050, or by email: swilson@sfai.org. Residencies can begin immediately.

A new web site for Hurrican Katrina-effected artists, the purpose of which is to give artists a free place to park information about their work and possibly attract a different crowd online. It is completely free -- there is no fine print or strings attached. See www.katrinaartists.com. The Actors' Fund of America provides emergency assistance to professionals in the entertainment industry (music, dance, film, television, circus & theater). If you are in need of emergency assistance due to Hurricane Katrina, please call The Actors’ Fund at 800.221.7303. Please identify where you are calling from and ask to have an intake worker paged. If you call and get the voicemail system, dial extension 119. American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) members affected by the flood are encouraged to call the Actors' Fund intake worker. The Actors’ Fund’s Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic can provide free primary medical care to any uninsured or underinsured dislocated Katrina performing arts professional staying in the in the New York tri-state area.

MUSIC
The Jazz Foundation of America was just named the Coordinator for the
New Orleans Musicians Clinic, as well as other groups in the Gulf Area who are helping the musicians in New Orleans. The Jazz Foundation of America is also now covering at least the first month’s rent for jazz and blues musicians and replacing lost instruments.

WWOZ 90.7 FM has a thorough list of resources for New Orleans musicians listed on their web site.

Until the recent devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the Tipitina's Foundation devoted its efforts to uplifting the New Orleans music community through its Music Co-op Office, Instruments A-Comin' benefit concerts and the Tipitina's Internship Program. That mission has changed, as Tipitina now fights to save and rebuild that very community. Tipitina is currently finding musicians housing, gigs and instruments while they raise funds through donations and nationwide benefit concerts to meet the challenges in the coming weeks and months. Tipitina's Uptown, 501 Napoleon Avenue, will open up as soon as they can return as a Musical Community Center with a Music Co-Op.

MusiCares and The Recording Academy have established the MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund, a $1 Million dollar commitment of charitable funds to be distributed to musicians and other music industry people directly affected by this disaster. Hurricane Relief Assistance may include funds for basic living expenses such as shelter, food, utilities, cell phones and transportation; medical expenses including doctor, dentist, hospital bills and medication; clothing and toiletries; musical instrument and recording equipment replacement; relocation costs; school supplies for students; cell phone service; insurance payments and more. Applicants may also be referred to other resources, as needed. For further info, call MusiCares toll-free at 877.626.2748.

Safe Harbor for Our New Orleans Friends (SHONOF), a project of NOAH, a new Houston/New Orleans musicians support project, will contact New Orleans musicians, wherever they are, and let them know there is a support group in Houston ready to help them, provide housing, get gigs, and the like. Contact Gigi Hill, (713) 503-3518, gigi@noahleans.org.

Housing and other assistance for Gulf Coast orchestral musicians, run by Drew McManus.

The Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Fund, established by Jazz at Lincoln Center and administered through the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, announces grants for musicians and music industry-related enterprises from the Greater New Orleans area. Individuals and organizations affected by Hurricane Katrina can download applications and review eligibility requirements from their web site. The deadline to receive submissions is November 7, 2005. Grants for individuals will be made up to $15,000, with priority given to professional jazz musicians. Grants up to $100,000 will be issued to nonprofit organizations, with priority given to music-related institutions.

Skowhegan is a summer residency for emerging professional artists. The participants are sixty-five exceptional young painters, sculptors, video, installation, and conceptual artists who come together for a nine-week session. They work independently with the assistance and critical guidance of distinguished artists who serve as Resident and Visiting Faculty. Skowhegan offers emerging artists an opportunity to work, reflect, and experiment; to begin to locate themselves as artists – free of the expectations of the market or academia.
