Flyer for Artists & Audiences Exchange project at St. Francis Residence, New York City

Artists & Audiences Exchange (A&AE) is a NYFA public program that brings high quality multidisciplinary arts programming into local communities throughout New York State.

The A&AE program provides recipients of the NYFA Artists’ Fellowship Awards with opportunities to design free public arts projects with non-profit organizations across New York state. NYFA Fellows partner with community-based organizations to make the contemporary arts available to a broad audience. All A&AE public service events are free of charge and open to the public.

A&AE fosters over 100 exchanges each year, from poetry readings in an urban community garden and a visual arts workshop for women with cancer, to a choreographer’s mini-residency at a state university. By reaching new audiences, A&AE expands the cultural dialogue between the public and contemporary artists and their work.

Through the Artists & Audiences Exchange program, NYFA Fellows and A&AE Sponsoring Organizations have joined together to create a wide range of dynamic projects and presentations.

  • Painting Fellow Phyllis Palmer presented a slide show of her portraits and discussed the process of portraiture at the Tivoli Free Library in Tivoli. Afterwards, Phyllis ran a public workshop, where participants created drawings of each other. An exhibition of the work was planned at the Village Hall.

  • Photography Fellow Nina Kuo visited the after school photography program at the Lower East Side Girl’s Club in New York City. There, she presented examples of her own photographs, demonstrated her technique of hand-coloring photographs, and talked about the history of the technique. The girls experimented with the process and shared their ideas in a group critique.

  • David Cale, who received a Fellowship in Poetry, gave a public reading and performance of his newest monologues and stories, as well as selections and songs from stage performances. Following the performance, the artist led a discussion about the work with audience members. The presentation was hosted by Housing Works Used Bookstore and Café, a non-profit which provides services and support to New Yorkers living with AIDS and HIV.

  • Choreographer Murray Spalding led a movement workshop for women with cancer at The Creative Center. The artist and members of her dance company performed, instructed and discussed the experience of meditative movement. The activities were centered aound Mandalas, an original work by Murray Spalding.
