Business of Art: Fall 2008

Taking It to the Streets:
A Guide to Making Art in the Public

Saturday, October 25, 9-4pm

Do you have an idea for a public art piece but no sense of how to make it happen? Are you interested in the questions and dialogue surrounding creating art in the public? Recognizing that public art exists in many forms from sculpture to performance to conceptual, NYFA’s Fall 2008 Business of Art Conference will offer an artist-focused discussion on the ins and outs of public art.

Taking It to the Streets will provide visual artists with practical information combined with candid anecdotal advice. Morning seminars will include an introduction to Percent for the Arts, a discussion between nonprofit arts organizations concerning commissions and competitions and will be followed by artist Eve Mosher’s account of what she learned when creating a large city-wide piece. An afternoon panel of arts professionals and practicing artists will provide further opportunity to raise questions around such topics as working with architects, funding large projects and developing marketing around your ideas. Throughout the day, curators and arts professionals will be available to give individualized feedback to artists on project proposals and portfolios.
