Emerging Leaders Boot Camp

Professional Development for Arts Administrators:

In 2012 the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) was pleased to announce the "Emerging Leaders Boot Camp", a year long free program that provided leadership training for arts administrators.

The 2012 "Emerging Leaders Boot Camp ” was developed from NYFA's "Artist as Entrepreneur" program that has been training artists since 2010. In extending this successful program to administrators, NYFA believes an investment in the cultural infrastructure will benefit the entire field, building stronger links and shared knowledge between artists and arts administrators.

The program trained 25 administrators in the principles of leadership involving strategic planning, goal setting, fundraising, and marketing. There was an additional focus on personnel, board development, defining a mission, and managing relationships with artists. Participants were given skills to assist them in their current roles in order to be more effective in their own organization as well as develop training that will help them assume leadership roles in the future.

The structure included a week-long 5 day intensive, quarterly check-ins and a final retreat in 2013. The program was blend of formal lectures, breakout groups, take-home assignments, and one-on-one consultations.

Eligible applicants were:

  • Mid-level administrators employed by non-profit arts organizations with budgets over $100,000
  • Executive Directors from non-profits arts organizations with budgetsunder $100,000
  • Commitment to mandatory attendance to all sessions
  • Open to participants from the New York Metropolitan Area
