A Cultural Blueprint for New York City

A Cultural Blueprint for New York City is a special project of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). It is an independent, non-partisan, citywide, multi-sector initiative of cultural and civic leaders concerned with supporting and sustaining the vital cultural life of New York City in the 21st Century.

Its principal goal is to impart a renewed appreciation for the full impact and role the arts and cultural sector plays in the life of New York City to elected officials, the public, and the media.

The Blueprint’s key areas of methodology include:

  • Interviews, Focus Groups, and Town Hall meetings in each borough to provide opportunities for inclusive discussion of the impact of the arts and culture
  • A cultural indicator study regarding cultural engagement and participation designed and conducted by the Fordham Institute for Innovation in Social Policy
  • Citywide community mapping of cultural activity conducted by the Community Mapping Assistance Project of New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG)
  • Reports on real estate issues conducted by the Center for an Urban Future (CUF)
  • Data gathering and research regarding funding and impact of cultural organizations and a profile on the cultural life of New York City

Released in November 2001, the Blueprint’s report, Culture Counts: Strategies for a More Vibrant Cultural Life for New York City, outlines the findings of its research and makes recommendations for City leaders. Please click here to view the report in PDF format.

A hard copy of the report can be picked up free of charge at NYFA's office.
