Artist Statement: The New York Beautification Project, consisting of forty small oval landscapes painted directly onto graffiti-covered ‘public spaces,’ brings landscape painting into the streets, inverting its old function of bringing the outside inside and instead providing the public with free, light-hearted access to an archetypal ‘high art’ experience. It sets painting in direct and hilarious opposition to graffiti in a way that will hopefully act as a catalyst for public discussion about expectations for art in public spaces.
