Artist Statement: I was able to focus on my work more, and developed a new series of works which dealt with similar conceptual terms as my earlier work, but witch are from a reductionist viewpoint. I feel my work became much clearer and simplified.
More about the Artist:
Andres Serrano is best known for his crisp photographic portraits of American citizens, corpses, klansmen, members of the Catholic Church, and celebrities. His most controversial work however has been photographs that depict bodily fluids and organic substances and mix these with religious icons. It is perhaps the extreme realism of Serrano’s work that is most powerful. Serrano writes:
“Even though I consider myself a conceptual artist, I am a traditionalist when it comes to photography. I like to use film and shoot straight. No technical gimmicks or special effects. What you see is what I saw when I looked though the camera. If I've dazzled you with lights and colors, it's because I've dazzled you with lights and colors. Ideas are more important than effects. And effects are always better when they're real.”
Serrano's works have been exhibited all over the world and reside in many galleries, museums, and collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, The Allen Art Museum at Oberlin College, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Funcación Proa in Buenos Aires, The Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, Malmö Konsthall in Sweden, and The Telefónica Foundation Collection in Madrid.
