Artist Statement:
Edited and distributed and promoted "Salam Bombay!" All of it was growth because it was my first feature-length fiction project.
More about the Artist:
Mira Nair most recently directed The Namesake, based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri. The feature film starred Kal Penn as a Bengali-American man confronting his identity and finding peace in the wake of his father’s death. Nair began her film career as an actor and then turned to directing.
Her work includes award-winning documentaries - So Far From India and India Cabaret, as well as features. Her first feature film, Salaam Bombay! was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1988. The critical and popular success of her films, including Monsoon Wedding (2001), Mississippi Masala(1991), and The Perez Family(1995) have made her one of the world’s most influential directors.
In 2005 Nair established an annual filmmaker's laboratory which is dedicated to the support of visionary screenwriters and directors in East Africa and India. She currently teaches at Columbia University.
