NYFA Artists
Artists' Fellowship - 1996 (Gregory Millard Fellow)
Choreography

Artist Statement:
As the duo Eiko and Koma, Eiko Otake and Takashi Koma Otake have collaborated for more than two decades, choreographing and performing their own work. Among their recent efforts is 'River,' and "outdoor environmental exploration," Premiered in Lexington, NY in 1995, the work brought modern dance to an open-air setting and integrated choreographed movement with motifs from nature. "We create movement theater works that reflect how we are connected to the world. In our dance, a mountain may call out in love and yearning to another mountain. Our own bodies are part of this landscape, and the ancestors who dwell within it can draw us as the moon draws the sea."

More about the Artist:
Takashi Koma Otake and Eiko Otake recently established a center to explore the relationship between art and teaching called The Center for Creative Research at Wesleyan University. The CCR brings dance students, architecture students, history students, science students together in a room together to participate in movement exercises and discuss movement’s significance in society and art.

Interdisciplinary and innovative, Eiko and Koma have performed all over the world. In 1996 they received a MacArthur Fellowship.
