Artist Statement: Stereotypical Western notions of modern-day Islam are satirized and subverted in Shirin Neshat's work, which mixes portraiture with Koranic inscriptions and the threat of potential violence (represented by handguns pointed at the viewer). "This body of work focuses on the female sector and the psychological and emotional complexities that exist beneath the surface - confronting and disclaiming the colonial images of Islamic women as exotic possessions, erotic objects and submissive creatures which pervade Western fictions."
