More about the Artist:
Barbara Kopple, a two-time Academy Award winning filmmaker, won her first Oscar with the full-length documentary Harlan County USA (1976) about the coal miners' strike against the Brookside Mine of the Eastover Mining Company in Harlan County, Kentucky.
She has directed work for PBS, The Working Group, and commercials for Target. Her first non-documentary feature film, Havoc (2005), starred Anne Hathaway and Bijou Phillips as wealthy, restless, suburban teens who venture into East L.A. Latino gang territory. Most recently, her cameras were there to capture the controversy surrounding the Dixie Chicks, as they record and release their first album after making critical comments about President Bush before the U.S. war in Iraq.
Kopple's newest work is a Disney Channel documentary following students in Fort Worth, Texas performing a theatrical version of High School Musical.
1977 Academy Award, Best Documentary Feature for Harlan County USA
1990 Academny Award Best Documentary Feature for American Dream
Three documentary awards at the Sundance Film Festival, 1991.
