Poetry
Artist Statement: I brought to completion a book-length manuscript of poetry which has recently been accepted for publication by the University of Arkansas Press. The book is called "The Apple that Astonished Paris".
More about the Artist:
Billy Collins’ spare, down-to-earth, and honest work has made an important impact on American poetry due its accessibility and humor. His most recent book of poems She Was Just Seventeen is a collection of haiku, the only traditional form that Collins employs.
About Collins, the poet Stephen Dunn has said,
"We seem to always know where we are in a Billy Collins poem, but not necessarily where he is going. I love to arrive with him at his arrivals. He doesn't hide things from us, as I think lesser poets do. He allows us to overhear, clearly, what he himself has discovered."
Appointed Poet Laureate of the United States, 2001-2003; Literary Lion of the New York Public Library, 1992, and New York State Poet, 2004, Collins is also a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, NEA Fellowships, and numerous awards from Poetry magazine.
