Painting
Artist Statement: Ruth Root's work includes such fanciful and enigmatic images as the mysterious shaggy creature in 'It' and the novel arrangement of dusters and Budweiser labels in 'Wallflower.' These paintings can be read as reflexive commentaries on their own status as art objects in that all are part of a larger series of works from fictitious art collections imagined by the artist. Viewers are free to extrapolate details about the setting or collection in which each painting belongs. Some of these collections include apartments belonging to hairdressers, prostitutes and pet-lovers; and Alcoholics Anonymous meeting lounge; and the smoking area in a corporate office.
