Artists' Fellowship - 1994
Playwriting/Screenwriting

Artist Statement:
Holly Hughes has distiguished herself over the last decade as a solo performance artist and playwright, whose works inculde "Dress Suits to Hire" (1988), World Whithout End" (1989), and her most recent solo piece "Clit Notes" (1993). Her 1993 stageplay, "No Trace of the Blonde", depicts two adolescent girls, growin up in surreally bleak suburban town, who simultaneously fall in love and become fascinated with science, both "real" science and the idea of science as a kind of distancing mechanism. Their clinical experiments allow enough emotional cushioning for them to parse the alienating phenomena of their surroundings and their desires: as if their own bodies had more to do with the Solar System or the Ice Age than with GIRLS IN LOVE.
