Painting
Artist Statement: John Allen uses the language of geometric abstraction to obtain "meaning other than the purely formal or the purely perceptual. It’s not that I think these things are unimportant; they are important.... These paintings are really about something else—something deeper, something subliminal, something in the unconscious. For example, the title Shusui Sanshoku/You See What You See includes a reference to an early Japanese print by Masanobu depicting a warrior and two attendants contemplating the swirling contents of an enormous sake bowl. The experience of my painting is meant to feel a little like being in front of that sake bowl."
