Artists' Fellowship - 2000
Painting

Artist Statement:
The paintings, indeed my whole artistic program, is about personal and world history seen as equivalent formulations. Then too, it’s about internal, psychological and emotional states: like fear of destruction of the self by violent others. But alas, it’s about whatever you say it is that completes the cycle of the work’s production. The paintings in the Cargo Series are informed by two separate yet articulated histories: the first is personal and has to do with the historical narrative of the African people who were captured, containerized and shipped across the water during the Atlantic slave trade; and the second is concerned with the art historical tradition of Minimalism, its seriality and repetition, reflected in the images and formal regularity of the grid.

Participated in the exhibition Buying Time: Nourishing Excellence at Sotheby's, New York, from June-July 2001.
