NYFA Artists
Artists' Fellowship - 2000
Painting

Artist Statement:
In my paintings, the single elements of larger compositions are small painted wood tiles with magnets on the back. I invent structures with moveable parts, investigating the possibilities of a visual language game where a specific vocabulary of color and geometric form is fixed but the rules of syntax are undeclared. By creating rearrangeable paintings and admitting rules of chance to the process of composition, sequences and variations are rendered in broken patterns, reflecting a life where order coexists with randomness." Cantrell’s rhythmic, colorful works are sometimes arranged by a toss of a coin, for example, ba lo ba sha, which is constructed of 772 small painted wood squares, arranged by the artist.

More about the Artist:
Participated in the exhibition Buying Time: Nourishing Excellence at Sotheby's, New York, from June-July 2001.
