Artist Statement:
As a painter, I find surface, color, space and line my realm of explorations. This recent work, largely monochromatic, scales down on the hierarchy and drama between the differences of materials and focuses more on spatial and color nuances placing lines of innertubes next to each other. This body of work reflects my attraction to simple repetition of line. The one as many...and the many as one. Sidewalks and streets are inspiration as formal considerations in my painting." Coates’ use of unconventional materials, innertubes and wood pallets, are used with a spare elegance.
