Artists' Fellowship - 2000
Painting

Artist Statement:
In [my] work there is a play between fine art and craft. By introducing mediums of decoration and sewing, I pay homage to traditional women’s work. Picking up materials and placing them in the paintings is my way of nesting, with the canvas as a place for ideas to hatch. These materials hold memories and stories for me. The bird is a totem that chose to be in my work. I try to honor it while it is with me. In Native American traditions small birds are seen as messengers who are sent by the ‘Great Creator’ to check up on us, evaluate our behavior and listen to our prayers." Satiny patches of embroidery mark Daniels’ drawings in thread. In some work she sews over painted areas of untreated canvas; other pieces are completely comprised of rigorous, brash stitches.

Participated in the exhibition Buying Time: Nourishing Excellence at Sotheby's, New York, from June-July 2001.
