Artists' Fellowship - 2000
Painting

Artist Statement:
Today more than ever, we see the world through the lens and perspective of an electronic media. Photography and film, video and the Internet all shape our perceptions and attitudes and the ways in which we picture contemporary society. Ironically, what began as a critique of the effects and seduction of a media-based culture has, in fact, seduced me into developing this current body of work. [These paintings] are my attempt to picture the world of nature and culture as seen through the detritus of the high-tech, electronic planet we inhabit." Groscost’s oil and flashe compositions tremble with barely contained electricity. In his piece Transmission II, long scrapes of charged, yellow-green paint part just enough for a flash of bright, hot fuscia to push through.
