Artists' Fellowship - 2000
Painting
Artist Statement: Charles Hewitt uses a personal vocabulary of images in his paintings. The active, physical compositions are alive with Guston-like shapes in a deeply layered, fluctuating space. Motifs anchored in the physical world emerge from the work, glimpses of nautical New England, whaling and Catholicism. A great humor emanates from these graphic compositions; the artist’s deep enjoyment of painting clearly puts itself forth.
