NYFA Artists
Artists' Fellowship - 2003 (NYFA Prize Winner)
Printmaking/Drawing/Artists Books

Artist Statement:
I work in charcoal for the power of blackness: the deep, endless void it can represent. Men in power, particularly politicians, have been my current focus. I use media images, sometimes making their skin from newspaper collage. Scale is essential for the manifestation of power, and my drawings are generally overwhelming in size. The emotional content of this work is a landscape of inaccessibility; the men form an impenetrable wall.

More about the Artist:
Recipient of the 2003 NYFA Prize.

I grew up in Columbus, Ohio, moving to New York to attend Pratt Institute on a full merit scholarship as a painting major, graduating with honors in 1977. I worked as a freelance textile designer for several years while raising my three sons.

I received my M.F.A. from Stony Brook University in 2001. I have been an artist-in-residence at Art Omi International Artists’ Colony. I had a solo show at Tatar Alexander Gallery in Toronto. I am currently an artist-in-residence at the Henry Street Settlement on the Lower East Side, where I also participate in their gallery education program, and teach painting at the 92nd Street Y. I have also taught a drawing class at the Urban Family Center, a shelter for homeless families and battered women.
