Artists' Fellowship - 2000 (Gregory Millard Fellow)
Painting

Artist Statement:
Jankunas’ work is about the difficulties of starting a completely new life as a stranger in a new place, having to build your life from scratch again. One of these experiences is looking for a job. Taking the New York Times Sunday issue, the artist marked ads in the Help Wanted section. Liking the way the page looked, "I started drawings on newspaper pages, and then I decided to paint. Each painting represents particular pages of the newspaper with the number of page and date painted on the canvas in exact order as in the Help Wanted section of the New York Times." Jankunas’ oils are adjacent, exhaustive columns of small rectangular blocks. The paintings reflect the endlessly repetitive task of looking through the newspaper in search of employment.

More about the Artist:
Participated in the exhibition Buying Time: Nourishing Excellence at Sotheby's, New York, from June-July 2001. Also, organized and led Artists & Audiences Exchange event at Life Spire, Brooklyn, NY, August 2001.
