Painting
Artist Statement: "Each summer for the past 20 years I leave the studio and make Street art. I photograph my object, run it through the computer, print it out on vinyl bumper sticker paper, then paint it with acrylic; then I cut out the object[s], pack my mobile studio on the back of the motorcycle, cruise looking for good ‘backgrounds.’ Finding one I stick my piece up on the wall or door, then add a shadow or light corona with the airbrush after which I photograph it and leave. The pieces are non-permissional and therefore risky, but the combination of a gentle aesthetic agenda, street smarts, and that I usually work in ‘disenfranchised’ neighborhoods means I’m pretty much left alone by the authorities. Thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds see my work." By painting everyday subjects in a realistic manner and placing them out of context, Witz’s work is as humorous as it is populist. In Baby Hands, he has positioned a pair of reaching, curious baby hands on a gritty back alley door.
