Cathy Crane, Anna Moschovakis, Christine Nadir, and Cary Peppermint work in different disciplines—film, poetry, and digital arts—yet what unites them, besides recently being awarded 2009 NYFA fellowships, is that they reside in rural regions of upstate New York. | Natasha Randall on translating A Hero of Our Time |

To translate a novel from Russian to English—a novel which served as inspiration for Tolstoy and Dostoevsky (and was previously translated by Nabakov) is an unequivocally ambitious as well as intimate experience. Natasha Randall reports from London on the process of working on Lermontrov’s A Hero of Our Time, just out from Penguin, and on balancing between remaining faithful to the text and keeping in mind the contemporary reader.
