Teaching Artist Source: NYFA's New Service for NY Teaching Artists

Matthew Deleget, Information & Research, NYFA

In April of 2004, NYFA launched a new online information service and telephone/email hotline for New York State teaching artists called Teaching Artist Source. Teaching Artist Source is part of NYFA’s national database of programs for artists of all disciplines called NYFA Source, the most comprehensive in the country.

Teaching Artist Source provides New York State teaching artists with free, comprehensive, up-to-the-minute information about hundreds of award programs, services, and publications on the local, state, and national levels. The service also includes information on a wide variety of teaching opportunities for artists—from elementary schools, middle and high schools, workshops, classes, and studio programs, to apprenticeships, internships, and community-based programs.

All Teaching Artist Source information is free and is available 24 hours a day/7 days a week on NYFA’s website through an easy-to-use search engine. For further information, email teachingartistsource@nyfa.org or visit www.nyfa.org/teachingartistsource.

NYFA’s Teaching Artist Source is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State agency.

Empire State Partnerships' Summer Seminar Program

Philip Alexander, Program Director, ESP Professional Development Program

The Empire State Partnerships (ESP) Program’s eighth annual Summer Seminar will be held this year from July 19-22 at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University in Brookville, NY. The four-day Summer Seminar is a professional development retreat for teaching artists, arts administrators, teachers, and school administrators.

During the seminar, arts-in-education practitioners will engage in peer-based conversations and discussions with nationally-recognized arts education experts. They will also explore issues relating to the practice and philosophy of arts-in-education, plan with their school-based team, consult with professionals about arts-in-education programming, participate in workshops, and network with colleagues from all over New York State.

Long Island University maintains a School of Education that offers a degree program in Arts Education, and is the home of several arts institutions, such as the Tilles Center for Performing Arts and the Hillwood Art Gallery.

ESP was launched in 1996 as a joint initiative between the New York State Education Department and the New York State Council on the Arts. Through identifying, supporting, and developing collaborations between cultural organizations and schools, ESP aims to raise standards for students and to permanently integrate the arts into K-12 classrooms throughout New York State. ESP grants have gone to 65 partnerships across New York State in 2003-2004.
