Contractual Museum Educator
American Folk Art Museum
(New York NY)

The American Folk Art Museum is home to one of the world’s finest collections of traditional folk art and the work of contemporary self-taught artists.  Through its renowned permanent collection of more than 5,000 works of art, the museum has been introducing audiences to the story of folk art for more than four decades.

The American Folk Art Museum seeks contractual educators to design and implement inquiry-based programs for school groups at the museum.  Programs involve a discussion-based gallery session and optional sketching activity, and on occasion may contain a hands-on art-making activity in the classroom.  Contractual educators will occasionally be asked to attend paid professional development sessions.

Qualifications
BA required, MA in art history, education or related field preferred; at least 2 years experience teaching in a cultural institution; proficiency in using inquiry-based teaching techniques with children in grades K to 12, and ability to create engaging, developmentally appropriate tours for students in the museum’s collection and special exhibitions; familiarity with New York City social studies and art curricula; comfort with teaching studio arts as related to educational programs; excellent organizational and communication skills; willingness to work with and engage a variety of ages.

To apply, submit letter of interest, resume, and references to Jennifer Kalter, Manager of School and Family Programs at jkalter@folkartmuseum.org.
