601Artspace is a not-for-profit contemporary art organization headquartered in Chelsea, New York. It is a place for experimentation in concert with established and emerging artists and curators. 601 interprets and exhibits works belonging, but not limited to, the founder's collection. It has an emphasis on photography, painting, installation, video and new media. 601 initiates and produces museum-quality, critical exhibition projects, events and curatorial programs.
The 601Artspace Director is a flexible, part-time position overseeing all aspects of 601's multi-dimensional programming. The selected candidate will possess a broad vision to further develop 601's diverse range of programs, openness to a variety of experimental collaborations with artists, staff and guest curators, and the talents of a skilled administrator adept at handling the operations of facility management. The Director will join a dynamic collegial team consisting of the 601Artspace Founder, the Director of Special Projects, and the Collection Manager; together this team will engage each other, invited collaborators, and the larger arts community in a process of dialogue and discovery about contemporary art and our greater society.
Responsibilities include: - Proposing, developing and executing a cyclical program of temporary exhibitions - Overseeing all aspects of exhibition and event production - Collaborating on catalogue and exhibition texts, press materials and other publications - Administrating the website 601Artspace.org, and maintaining the public face of 601through the website and social networks - Coordinating aspects of the programming related to 601's affiliated permanent collection in tandem with the Collection Manager - Administrating exhibition documents, including condition reports, insurance certificates, and loan agreements - Tracking invoices, expenses, and budgets for all programming and exhibitions - Training and supervising assistants and interns - Coordinating the security and maintenance of 601Artspace's physical space including the HVAC and sprinkler systems and building relations
Candidates should possess: - Deep experience in and broad knowledge of contemporary art, including new media - A proven track record of unique and experimental programming in the arts - The ability to multi-task, problem solve, and to be self-sufficient and resourceful - Website administration skills, Mac fluency, Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign skills and experience using art databases (601's current database is iCollect); advanced computer skills would be a plus - Excellent written and verbal communication skills - Excellent organizational skills - Excellent references
Key objectives of this position include: - Collaborating with the 601 team to continue and expand 601's programming, including taking risks with new programming formats - Leveraging and animating 601's affiliated collection of contemporary art toward the goal of creating an experiential vehicle for experimentation and learning - Building visibility for 601's programs of exhibitions and events - Developing new partnerships with interesting, unusual, and brilliant people and institutions both domestically and abroad
