Brian Lynch at the Saugerties Public Library Gallery
Exhibitions

Saugerties artist Brian Lynch produces work with seemingly minimal means to arrive at maximum emotion.  His ink drawings and prints (litho and etching) are on display through March 2012 in the new Saugerties Public Library Art Gallery on the ground floor. Brian has created a 5 foot by 21 foot mural specifically for the adjacent gallery space that brings together a multitude of images that interest and move the artist.   This unique collaged work is the first site-specific work we have shown in our new space.   It’s an exciting event.  An opening reception will be held later this month on a Saturday, January 21st at 12pm.

Eve Andree Laramee
Exhibitions

NYFA Fellow, Eve-Andree Laramee, will be presenting work in the exhibition, ALCHEMY at 7Eleven Gallery, 711 Washington Street in the West Village. The show features artists Thomas Beale, Lucas Blalock, Nick Doyle, Adam Fuss, GAINES, Elissa Goldstone, Eve Andrée Laramée, Eva Lewitt, Dylan Lynch, Thomas McDonell, Casey Neistat, Lesley Raeside, Jason Reppert, Alex Rickard, Keith Sonnier, Michael St. John, William Stone and Rob Wynne.

Laramee’s work on the culture of science manifests the information embedded in history and materiality. In the downstairs space her video “Uranium Decay,” draws attention to radioactivity as a “dark, inverse” form of alchemy. Responding to the ongoing Fukushima nuclear reactor melt-downs the work illuminates the 4.47 billion-year half-life decay cycle of uranium-238 superimposed onto thermographs. As uranium decays over geological time, it transmutes into “uranium daughters” that cascade to other elements and finally to stable Lead-206.  Adjacent is a site-specific installation, “Invisible Fire,” built within an architectural anomaly: stairs leading to nowhere. Laramee repurposes Depression-era glass that fluoresces under ultraviolet light. Glass was historically used for alchemical vessels; and the use of uranium oxide as a pigment dates back to 79 AD Rome. Depression glass production sharply curtailed during the Cold War due to military “need” and it has since become a collectible. “Invisible Fire” poetically draws attention to the environmental, health and labor issues concerning nuclear weapons and their complex partnership with the nuclear energy industry.

Upstairs her two video sculptures: “Memories of the Stones” and “Dreams of the Plants” reference the evolution and transformation of materials from the mineral, vegetable and animal states of matter. Other sculptures correlate to her well-known installation, “Apparatus for the Distillation of Vague Intuitions” on the transformation of human thought and knowledge.

Carrie Pollack: Witness
Exhibitions

MINUS SPACE is delighted to announce the exhibition Carrie Pollack: Witness. This is the Brooklyn-based artist’s first solo exhibition in New York and it will feature a suite of new paintings consisting of digital prints on linen.

Carrie Pollack describes her work as “a catalog of her memories”. In it she examines what we as individuals consciously or unconsciously choose to remember, and how our memories of people, places, and events degrade and change over time. Begun after the death of her father in 2009, Pollack’s new paintings are both poetic and existential, and they investigate the notions of permanence and impermanence, as well as uncertainty and contradiction. She deliberately intends her paintings to function “more as conversations than as statements”. Her imagery can often appear both familiar and unknown at the same time spanning both abstraction and representation.

"Painted Voices: Photographs of Mission Murals by Miriam Romais."  Curated by Andrea Arroyo.
Images of fences, garage doors, aluminum siding or windows take on new meaning when layered with painted expressions of deeply felt political action, spirituality, rebellion, playfulness and love – these murals assert the voice of the painters, and in many cases are an expression of the hopes and dreams of a neighborhood.
A percentage of all sales will be donated to Precita Eyes in San Francisco, an organization that has been instrumental in their creation and preservation.

Unexpired Time
Exhibitions

Installation by Barbara Smith

An accumulation of things predestined to disappear or go unnoticed, Unexpired Time is an exhibition of photographs, video and commonplace objects that mark presence without identity. Items such as parking meters, keys and coins are collected, translated or transformed to function as tools for measurement and elicit a reconsideration of everyday routines.

Barbara Smith received the 32nd Annual Contemporary Crafts Juror’s Choice Award in 2011 and was awarded a solo exhibition in the Dr. Ruth Tan Project Room.

Sound Away from Sense
Exhibitions

Jacquaro Rihet Gallery presents Sound Away from Sense, a group exhibition featuring work by Lea Cetera, Ivy Haldeman, Keren Oxman and Dolsy Smith. Opening reception: Saturday, February 4, 6pm-8pm. View by appointment only. Contact jacquarorihet@gmail.com, t: 212 979 0030.

Sound Away from Sense, found among the accouterments of an East Village apartment, takes texture and surface as points of query, webs of cultural continuity, and spaces of cognitive dissonance. The artist as anthropologist wanders among cultural artifacts, picking through the residue of crafted identities – magazine spreads, portraiture, costumes, canonical texts – to expose the interstitial syntax that hides the origin of their own distortion. Techniques of collage, mash-up and masking foreground the crucial question for a politics of the aesthetic: does the opacity of the senses mask or reveal?

Lea Cetera presents a furry mask and video, emphasizing the act of voyeurism. Her work plays with ideas of constructed identities, the fetishized object, entertainment and role-play. She is influenced by theater and performance, and works within the vernaculars of various sub-cultures.

Ivy Haldeman takes the standard office format, 8 1/2 by 11, black and white print, to delight in the gestural similarities of Town and Country and Cowboy Way. It is playful block building, creating tetris-like forms that conflate diamond rings with cowboy hats.

Keren Oxman’s work speculates on the intersection of art and anthropology, the temporal artifact and the exploration of cultural otherness. Her work employs techniques of collision, recombination, archiving and evoking nostalgia to create conceptual proximity between disparate sources.

Dolsy Smith expresses his interest in procedural writing and the creative potential of modern techniques of information processing, including the mash-up and the Markov chain.  His piece represents a wildly unfaithful translation of passages from Marx and Vladimir Nabokov.

Then the Darkness Fell
Exhibitions

Opening: Feb. 16th, 6–8pm
In this series of new charcoal drawings, Then the Darkness Fell, the figurative artist Scott Hunt continues to explore his vision of a dystopian America. Hunt skillfully exploits the mysterious and obscuring nature of nighttime to create images that are enigmatic, humorous, and oddly beautiful. With characteristic sardonic wit and a flair for the dramatic, Hunt gives us modern-day allegories that examine themes and issues such as urban sprawl, the racism of the political right, the primordial fear of the dark, the dissolution of the middle class, and the aftermath of personal loss.

Loss is a leitmotif that runs through much of the work in this collection. The eponymously titled drawing, for example, is a lamentation on the death of Hunt’s brother from pancreatic cancer in 2008. The work is an elegiac meditation on the limits of faith, the repercussions of familial tragedy, and the meaning of an individual human life.

Hunt begins by collecting discarded vernacular photos. After culling a selection from hundreds of snapshots, Hunt identifies elements that are intriguing in each photograph—a curious figure, a bit of architecture, a moody landscape—and then removes them from their original context. He recombines those elements until he has created an entirely new mise-en-scène with a reinvented narrative.
These new narratives often reflect a dark, mysterious, and somewhat Gothic view of America: Suburbs leach danger; authority figures evince moral turpitude; nature threatens; and the surface appearance of things belies the more messy and complicated realities of being human. Hunt’s wry sense of humor leavens throughout without removing the sting.

This is Scott Hunt’s fifth solo exhibition, his third in New York and the first with Schroeder Romero & Shredder. He is a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow and a recipient of a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His work is in the permanent collection of The Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
