Douglas Melini: It Flows Over Us Without Meaning
Exhibitions

MINUS SPACE is delighted to announce a new solo exhibition by Brooklyn painter Douglas Melini. Douglas will be exhibiting a group of new acrylic on canvas paintings with hand-painted frames. Known for his use of densely visual patterns, Douglas' new work continues his decade-long investigation into pattern and color. In contrast to his previous work, which utilized asymmetrical all-over fields of pattern, his new paintings elicit a kaleidoscopic effect and feature single, bilaterally symmetrical forms constructed from juxtaposed grid and stripe patterns.

His new paintings also feature a new visual element not present in his previous work: elaborate, hand-painted frames. Douglas views the frame and painting in his new work as a single object. Resembling a frieze, the painted frame defines the outside perimeter of the painting, acts as a viewfinder for the forms depicted in the painting, and enables the painting's surface to function as an interior space.

Douglas Melini has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, including at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center/MoMA, White Columns, Danese Gallery, Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, Southfirst (all NYC), Gallery Sonja Roesch (Houston, TX), Richard Heller Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), Rocket Gallery (London, UK), DaimlerChrylser Contemporary (Berlin, Germany), and Illeana Tounta Gallery (Athens, Greece), among others. In 2008, Douglas was awarded a Painting Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. His work has been featured in the New York Sun, New York Observer, Artnet Magazine, Mallorca Magazin, and P.S.1 Newspaper, and included in corporate and private collections worldwide, including The Daimler Collection, The Progressive Corporation, The Phillip Schrager Collection, and Wellspring Capital Corporation. Douglas holds an MFA from California Institute of the Arts, CA, and a BA from the University of Maryland, MD.

Drawings and paintings of the Fulton Fish Market by Naima Rauam in the Fourth Annual Remembering Fulton Fish Market Art Exhibit. Location is @SEAPORT! Gallery, 210 Front Street, corner of Beekman, South Street Seaport, New York City.

Although the Fulton Fish Market left Lower Manhattan in November 2005 for the Bronx, its gravitational force still influences the work of artist Naima Rauam. For many years, Naima spent countless nights recording market scenes in her sketchbooks. These sketches are the basis for new drawings and paintings in this annual remembrance of the Market. For three weeks the spirit of the fishmongers again resides at South Street Seaport. Also go to artpm.com for information.

Kriya
Exhibitions

“Kriya” is a solo art exhibition by Jayanthi Moorthy. It is a vibrant collection of paintings of modern and traditional India.

Jayanthi Moorthy is a self taught artist.  Her works have been exhibited in galleries in India.  She tries to interpret the intricacies of life through her paintings. Ms. Moorthy is displaying three of her collections.

The first collection depicts the expressions of women in India.  The rich panoply of colors seen in the apparel of Indian women, in their henna embellishments and simple decorations outside their homes, accentuates their simple actions.  The colors and impetuous strokes shows the artist’s admiration for women who use vibrant colors to elevate their spirits and their mundane surroundings.

The second collection of paintings captures some of Ms. Moorthy’s feelings while practicing Yoga.  In this process she has found herself stretching, physically and mentally beyond her comfort zone.  The colorful renditions represents her playful encounters with yoga.

The third collection of paintings were inspired by the interplay of light and texture on sculptures in the cave temples of Mahabalipuram, India.  Fluorescent washes of color with shades of black have been used to bring out the intricate details.

Highly acclaimed jazz/blues/R&B re-imagining of Carole King classic. 1650 Broadway, Res: 212-582-2121; $25 cov, $10 min Great food!

"Extraordinary work. Every element and every moment contribute unerringly to an unforgettable, quite remarkable whole."  Critic and columnist Roy Sander

"Tapestry Rewoven is a unique work of contemporary jazz....  Although it is not yet a CD, Tapestry Rewoven promises to deliver its own stamp of 'classic.'" Elizabeth Ahlfors, Cabaret Scenes

"... a masterwork not unlike her idol's," David Finkle, Back Stage

"A scat specialist who can project heartbreak, strength, vulnerability, and feminine grace within a single number, Krauz wowed the appreciative Wednesday night crowd. It felt like a serendipitous fusion of the turbulent 1970s and the challenging yet hopeful early-2000s. The songs are all from King's Tapestry album, and the notion of revisiting the work of a fine artist in this manner proved a great one. Here's hoping Krauz doesn't stay away from our fair city too long.    Les Spindle, Back Stage West

"From the moment show began, the audience completely came on board for the ride. And what a ride it was."  Ligia Fernandez, Broadway Café Society

Revolving Twilight
Exhibitions

Revolving Twilight is an immersive video/sound installation inspired in part by tales from nautical lore, notions of optical phenomena and illusion, and neurological case studies exploring mental and visual perception, fragmented or dwindling memory, and cognitive disruptions. The piece investigates the sometimes ethereal interaction of light with physical matter or form that results in unearthly mirages, often referred to as fata morgana. These otherworldly occurrences are specifically visible in apparitions of ghost ships refracted in a flickering ether. Floating, hovering, and capsizing, these elusive visions are thought of not only as portents of doom, but also sources of wonder and spectral beauty. Using a wide spectrum of media as well as sculptural elements and structures, Revolving Twilight is an open-ended hallucination without a beginning or an end, combining moments of exuberant chaos with serene beauty and rest. Engaging minimal yet evocative images buoyed by a mesmeric sound score, this ever shifting installation traverses the terrain of visual delusions and altered states of consciousness.

Hans Tammen & Third Eye Orchestra
Concerts

Mari Kimura (vio), Jason Hwang (vio), Stephanie Griffin (vla), Tomas Ullrich (cel)
Marty Ehrlich (bcl, as, fl), Briggan Krauss (as, bari), Herb Robertson (trpt), Robert Dick (fl, cbfl)
Dafna Naphtali (voice, live sound processing), David Simons (theremin/gongs)
Denman Maroney (p/kb), Ursel Schlicht (p/kb)
Stomu Takeishi (b), Satoshi Takeishi (perc)
Hans Tammen (composer, live arrangement, concept).

Hans Tammen uses Earle Brown's open form composition idea as a starting point to create a large multi-movement piece, thoroughly composed and purely improvised at the same time. He gets his thrill out of exploring the world of sounds, and by superimposing or phasing of multiple rhythms. His new work ANAGENESIS draws from a single repertoire of around 100 pre-conceived musical units. The conductor uses the orchestra as an instrument, while each performer shapes the music through virtuosic improvisation and the individual stylization of musical performance. "Everything about Third Eye Orchestra... indicates mastery and control" (Howard Mandel / CD Liner Notes).

"I have felt that the conditions of spontaneity and mobility of elements which I have been working with create a more urgent and intense “communication” throughout the entire process, from composing to the final realization of a work, I prefer that each “final form,” which each performance necessarily produces, be a collaborative adventure, and that the work and its conditions of human involvement remain a 'living' potential of engagement." (Earle Brown)

The 2006 Roulette performance was released as "Antecedent/Consequent" on Innova, the label of the American Composers Forum. All About Jazz called the music "nothing short of breathtaking", and "a masterpiece of musical evocation".
