The McKibbin Loft Project is a series of color portrait photographs and recorded interviews that feature the inhabitants of the McKibbin Loft apartment building, located in the neighborhood of Bushwick in Brooklyn.
The McKibbin Lofts are a place where artists, writers, musicians, dancers, actors, and creative professionals live. The spaces in this retired knitting factory are each divided by the landlord and added to by the dweller. Each space a unique patchwork of architectural invention from past and present.
The McKibbin Loft Project sets out to document the stories of these spaces, and serves as a historical account of a unique time and place. The neighborhood is changing fast with the influx of new business and money. Rent increases are pushing these artists out and contributing to the fast decline of this building as we know it.
A collection of photographs, coupled with recorded interviews, will be displayed in a gallery exhibition for the inhabitants, community, and public to view. In addition, printed interviews and portraits with be published as a catalogue.
