Over the next 25 years we are creating fifty installations based on queer histories from each state, histories that are only now being celebrated. The project asserts that LGBTQ2 people have been an integral though under-recognized force in shaping the American experience at every point the nation's history.
In September 2016 we will present "50 States: Texas, Oklahoma, & Colorado" at the Invisible Dog Art Center in Brooklyn before hopefully bringing them back to the states they were made for. We are currently living in Houston, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma where we have been researching and developing these pieces for the last 18 months.
Your support will make it possible for us to pay our collaborators, cover travel expenses, and fabricate these ambitious installations, while exhibiting them, always free of charge to the public.
We were raised with a poverty of imagery with which to understand our place as queers in our national mythology. As society's views towards sexuality and gender identity are rapidly evolving, we are using "50 States" to begin building the image bank that we wish we had grown up with.
