Blue Collar,a collaboration between Christian Johnston and Shamar Hill, explores the relationship between photography and writing. Both mediums are arts of survival. In photography, the manipulation of shadow and light holds an image, suspended in time like a frozen memory. In writing, language invites the participation of the reader and his/her imagination. Ultimately, this collaboration is an evocation, a dialogue inviting the viewer to imagine story.
Blue Collar, through interviews, portraits, and the voices of the subjects themselves, explores the lives of working class workers that are often overlooked, such as, waitresses, steel workers, fishermen. It is our hope by telling their stories that we can learn not only about our communities but perhaps learn how to be a better neighbor.
