Hecho in Tránsito/ Made in Transit
“Hecho en Tránsito / Made in Transit” is inspired by the Surrealist "exquisite corpse" game in which multiple artists or writers have limited information to work on a single artwork. Four American artists and four Cuban artists will participate. Each U.S. artist is paired with a Cuban counterpart, and each gives an initial work of art to their partner. (The project director/curator acts as the conduit for transporting the artworks between artists.)
Each pair of artists is given contact info for one another as well as a brief synopsis of their overall body of work and about the specific art they give to the other. The artist pairs determine the parameters of their collaboration and the extent of verbal communication they wish to have as they transform the given artwork.
The pieces are swapped at least three times over the course of the project, approximately every 4-5 months. American artists will have the opportunity to travel to Cuba to work with their counterparts and to attend the opening in Havana, and Cuban artists will be invited to attend the opening of the culminating exhibition pending U.S.-Cuban travel permissions.
