WE WERE STRANGERS, a documentary about The Strangers Project

Jessica Vogel

At the intersection of intimacy and anonymity lies a collection of over 25,000 truthful, handwritten stories called the Strangers Project. Through conversations, interviews and animation, the film WE WERE STRANGERS explores the tapestry of the human condition by bringing these stories to life.

WE WERE STRANGERS is about people, their stories, and why these stories matter. It’s about a simple idea that brings together thousands of individuals from all walks of life and unites them in a shared space of truth, anonymity and empathy. Brandon Doman, the founder of the Strangers Project, brings us along as he takes his life’s work on the road, traveling across America with a single question in mind: what’s your story? His own story provides a narrative thread throughout the film, guiding us through a patchwork of living moments. Together, we discover how a journey through the country becomes a journey through the human condition.
