NYFA Celebrates 30 Years of Artists Fellowships

Awards and Grants (Main) | NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships | Past Programs

Join NYFA for events around New York State as we celebrate 30 years of NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships

NYFA is commemorating three decades of NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships with the programming around the state, including a landmark traveling exhibition Artists as Innovators: Celebrating Three Decades of New York State Council on the Arts/New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships. The artists in the exhibition are acclaimed and respected around the world, but what is less known is that they all received support from NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships at crucial points in their careers. Curated by Judith K. Brodsky and David C. Terry with the assistance of Madeline Scholl, Artists as Innovators will feature work by more than 20 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellows who have gone on to record significant achievements in their artistic careers. The works on display will show how the fellows have addressed pressing and often controversial issues through their art, including racism, gender equality, sexual orientation, immigration, and globalization.

NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow Linda Montano’s performance as Bob Dylan becomes a suspension of disbelief. Montano is a seminal figure in contemporary feminist performance art and her work since the mid-1960s has been critical in the development of video by, for, and about women. Her artwork is starkly autobiographical and her influence is wide ranging – she has been featured at museums including The New Museum in New York, MOCA San Francisco and the ICA in London.

NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships, awarded in fifteen different disciplines over a three-year period, are $7,000 cash awards made to individual artists living and working in the state of New York for unrestricted use. These Fellowships are not project grants but are intended to fund an artist’s vision or voice, and provide the gift of time, regardless of the level of their artistic career.

Representatives from NYFA will be on hand at The Dorsky on October 23 to explain the application process, and offer examples on how to best present your work. A Q&A will follow the presentation.
