NYFA Celebrates 30 Years of Artists Fellowships

NYFA is celebrating! This is the 30th anniversary of our NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program. This year NYFA distributed a total of $642,000 to 95 artists and since 1985, the program has awarded over $27 million in unrestricted cash grants to more than 4,000 artists throughout New York State. Fellowship recipients include the winners of five Academy Awards, five Tony Awards, eight Pulitzer Prizes, two National Book Awards, and 15 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowships. As part of this celebration, NYFA held an exhibition, Triacontagon: A Celebration of 30 Years of the Artists’ Fellowship Program, and has been highlighting current and past Fellows on NYFA Current, and will be producing a variety of public events. As part of a competition to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program, this official 30th Anniversary logo was designed by Edwin Torres (Fellow in Poetry ‘01).

NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships are administered with leadership support from New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

On September 1 NYFA participated in DUMBO's First Thursday Gallery Walk with a performance by Balkan musician, Eva Salina (Fellow in Folk/Traditional Arts ‘15) and a special one-night Deeputsav installation from Aeilushi Mistry (Fellow in Folk/Traditional Arts '15), Rutvij Mistry, and Paulom Mistry.

This event brought together writers whose NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship helped foster their creative work. These Fellows are all Professional Members of PEN America, 
an organization of writers, editors, and translators fighting to defend free 
expression and celebrate literature abroad and here in the United States.

NYFA Board member, three-time fellowship recipient, and PEN America Member Saïd Sayrafiezadeh moderated the fifth event in this reading series.

The Surviving Artist in a Changing New York

Whiting Award winners—Dael Orlandersmith (Fiction ‘96), José Rivera (Playwriting/Screenwriting ‘88), and Saïd Sayrafiezadeh (Playwriting/Screenwriting ‘96, ‘06, Fiction '10)—talk about the effects of New York's convulsive cultural, financial, and political changes on writers.
