Work Sample Reviews recreate the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowships Award panel process, giving participants a behind-the-scenes view of NYFA’s artistic review panels. Work Sample Reviews provide valuable insight into the selection process that can strengthen any application for funding, residencies and exhibition opportunities. Participating artists follow NYFA’s application guidelines to submit images, videos, music or literary manuscripts through our customized review platform. On site at NYFA during the review, participants will receive feedback on their application presentation, artist statement and work samples. Evaluation is provided by a select group of arts professionals.
Participants prepare and submit digital applications online, including work samples, resumes and artist statements, using a similar interface used for NYFA’s awards and grants. Then professional art consultants and NYFA staff will provide critical and constructive feedback when participants come to our offices (Reviews can also take place off-site) to view their submissions in the context of a live-jury panel.
For educators: NYFA Work Sample Reviews are a powerful component of any program or syllabus, and have already been implemented in graduate, undergraduate and certificate programs, as well as independent organizations across the country and internationally. Participants in varying disciplines – including visual and time-based art – will benefit from this invaluable experience.
For individual artists: at different stages in their career, NYFA Work Sample Reviews will provide feedback that will strengthen their application material. We encourage participation from artists working in the following disciplines: Architecture, Environmental Structures, and Design, Choreography, Crafts and Sculpture, Digital and Electronic Arts, Fiction, Folk Arts, Interdisciplinary Work, Music and Sound, Nonfiction, Painting, Photography, Playwriting and Screenwriting, Poetry, Printmaking, Drawing and Book Arts, Video and Film.
