Assistant Registrar

Description

Jenkins Johnson Gallery is an internationally recognized contemporary art gallery dedicated to showcasing and supporting the work of emerging and established artists, with a focus on inclusive and socially relevant practices. We are currently seeking a full-time Assistant Registrar to join our New York team. This role integrates registrar responsibilities with key aspects of gallery operations, communications, and fair/exhibition coordination. The Assistant Registrar will manage the gallery's inventory and logistics, coordinate domestic and international shipments, and support the planning and execution of exhibitions and art fairs. The Assistant Registrar will report to the Head Registrar and make sure their role is always supported along with assisting with their daily tasks and projects. The ideal candidate will also bring strong administrative skills and can contribute to other roles and aspects of the gallery. This is a collaborative, detail-oriented position suited to someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about contemporary art.


Schedule: Full-Time, in-person position, Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. (occasional evenings and travel as needed)


Key Responsibilities:


Registration & Inventory Management

  • Maintain physical and digital inventory, including condition reports, location tracking, and insurance.
  • Coordinate packing, crating, shipping, and receiving of artworks (domestic and international).
  • Ensure all consignment agreements and loan forms are complete and current.
  • Schedule and support art handlers during installations and manage storage organization.
  • Track all artwork movements and maintain Artlogic and other inventory systems.
  • Monitor and replenish materials for packing, shipping, and installation.
  • Verify mediums and measurements for all incoming artworks
  • Ensure new inventory entries in the database include reproduction quality images
  • Point of contact with framer and assist with other production logistics
  • Verify each artwork's record in the database directly matches the gallery label on the back of each artwork


Exhibitions & Art Fairs

  • Assist with the planning and installation of gallery exhibitions and international art fairs.
  • Manage logistics, shipping, booth planning, artwork selection, and travel coordination.
  • Work closely with artists and vendors to ensure timely and professional execution of exhibitions.
  • Generate and maintain record of all Certificate of Authenticity (COA) when requested and/or at point of sales


Administrative & Proprietor Support

  • Create and manage invoices, sales records, shipping quotes, and client communications.
  • Assist directors and registrar with administration support along with daily operations.
  • Be able to handle artwork, packing, and shipping. Be able to provide proprietor support when needed.
  • Ability to lift and move artworks and crates safely.
  • Provide the gallery team with general assistance with tasks.


Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.F.A. in Art History, Museum Studies, Visual Arts, or related field); MFA/MA is a plus. Minimum 2–3 years of registrar or gallery experience in a contemporary gallery or museum. Familiarity with art market trends and contemporary art. Proficiency in Artlogic, Dropbox, MS Office, and Adobe Creative Suite; experience with Mailchimp, Canvas, Asana, and Slack is a plus. Ability to work on multiple projects at once. Professional demeanor and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
