Season-Long Internship - Literature Department

Symphony Space 05/07/2025
Hybrid: New York, NY
Internship Unpaid Student
Non-Profit, Entertainment/Film/Video, Publishing, Writing/Editing
Description

Calling all arts lovers and shelf-aware bibliophiles! Symphony Space is currently accepting applications from NYC-area college and university students for a hybrid internship in our Literature Department, beginning this September and ending May 2026. The Literature Intern goes behind the curtain of live event management to work closely alongside producers on all events, including Selected Shorts: Let Us Tell You A Story, a 10-program series featuring live readings of fantastic fiction by acclaimed actors; the Selected Shorts radio show and podcast, a 52-week series broadcast on public radio stations nationwide; Thalia Book Club, a series that brings authors into conversation with audiences about classic and contemporary fiction; Special Literary events, unique programs spotlighting high-profile literary releases; and Uptown Showdown, a comedy debate series. The Literature Intern works directly with authors and artists, reads and recommends short fiction, attends department meetings, and participates in day-to-day operations. It's a front row seat to the department's entire suite of programming, and we'd love to have you on our team!

10-20 hours per week, plus select events on weekday evenings (up to 2 shows per week). Must be free Monday through Thursday after 5:00 p.m. This is a hybrid position with required in-person hours for events and some office work. Interns will receive a weekly schedule to confirm their hours.

$150 stipend per week.

Please note that Symphony Space interns must be currently matriculating students.

Symphony Space internships offer excellent professional/educational experience and training in the areas of arts administration and production, as well as the opportunity to be part of a leading performing arts organization while continuing and completing college-level study. All interns are individually supervised by department staff and actively participate in full staff meetings, trainings, and gatherings.

Symphony Space is a multidisciplinary performing arts center where bold programming, presented in a uniquely warm and welcoming environment, forges indelible relationships between artists and audiences. Our fundamental mission is to connect art, ideas, and community through our programs and our commitment to literacy and education through the arts. On our New York City stages, through our national broadcasts, and in the classrooms and communities we serve throughout the country, we foster access to the arts through all the disciplines. Our embrace of the audience and the arts is wide, and the experience of our patrons is deep and enriched.

Our commitment to diversifying our workforce extends to all who join us in creating and presenting art. We strongly encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be. To learn more about Symphony Space’s mission, vision, values, and programs, please visit symphonyspace.org.
