“I was incredibly surprised when we were told we got our first grant from NYFA. And I think the reason was that basically architects were saying that Elizabeth and I were not architects, and artists were saying 'those guys aren't artists,' so we were in this gray zone. To be recognized by NYFA gave us a credibility that was very important to us, that people were in fact looking at our work and looking at what we were doing, and we were able to get a grant, a fellowship, to continue to do that.

— Ricardo Scofidio (Fellow in Architecture with Elizabeth Diller '85, '87, '98)

Our flagship NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program has supported artists at all stages of their professional careers for more than 30 years. We are proud that many of our past fellows have gone on to become world-renowned artists whose work has touched the lives of many. Each began with a creative vision--in video/film, writing, poetry, painting, composition, choreography, and more--needing only freedom, time, and reassurance to channel that vision through their work.
