The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) has announced the 2021 award cycle of the Recharge New Surrealist Prize, a $7,000 award for painters living in the United States and U.S. Territories who are working in the New Surrealist style. The award program, formerly called The Recharge Foundation Fellowship for New Surrealist Art, will be administered by NYFA with funding provided by the Gu Family of the Recharge Foundation. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, October 19 at 5:00 PM EDT, with full application details available at nyfa.org/RechargeNewSurrealistPrize.
The Recharge Foundation is a private non-profit organization that aims to promote cross-cultural craftsmanship preservation and create dialogues between antiques, high jewelry, fine arts, and technology. Founded as a private archive from a single family and an affiliate organization of Recharge Capital, Recharge Foundation evolved from a family passion to a platform with international ambitions. In addition to special projects and exhibitions, the foundation provides grants like the Recharge New Surrealist Prize to support contemporary artists, craftsmen, and designers.
“The Recharge New Surrealist Prize gives us the opportunity to support an individual artist’s voice and vision—one that is unique, layered, and unexpected,” said Lorin Gu, Founding Partner of Recharge Capital and a member of NYFA’s Board of Trustees. “We hope that this award enables the artist to further push creative boundaries in their work,” he added.
The New Surrealist style is an extension of the Surrealist movement, where artists combine relatable imagery in uncanny and unexpected situations within their work. Students in bachelor’s or master’s degree programs are eligible to apply for the Recharge New Surrealist Prize, however applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the application deadline.
“NYFA is proud to partner with Lorin and the Recharge Foundation in offering the Recharge New Surrealist Prize,” said Michael L. Royce, Executive Director, NYFA. “We hope this award will help an individual artist free up the time and space to do what they do best: create.”
