Description
IMPULSE Magazine is an arts and culture publication headquartered in New York City. IMPULSE publishes experimental, in-depth reviews and interviews to push the boundaries of global contemporary art criticism and theory formation.
IMPULSE Magazine is seeking sharp, insightful, and original voices to join our team of contributing writers. We publish rigorous, accessible, and theory-focused art criticism that challenges, contributes to, and expands the discourse around contemporary visual culture. We’re looking for writers who can offer more than description beyond the scope of press releases—we welcome perspective, critical analysis, and well-researched opinion.
What We Are Looking For:
- Critical clarity: Your writing should engage with art in a way that’s intellectually grounded yet readable. We value clarity over jargon, substance over spectacle.
- Original insight: Going beyond surface-level interpretations. We’re interested in how art intersects with politics, identity, technology, history, and the urgent questions of our time.
- Bold POV: We respect writers who can take a stance and defend it with thoughtfulness, research, and critical thinking.
- Conversational scholarship: Whether you’re covering a local exhibition or an international biennial, we expect you to write with awareness of art history and theory.
- Timeliness: We cover shows that have newly opened or are about to open. We publish reviews during the run of the exhibition so that readers have a chance to see the shows.
Types of Pieces We Publish:
- Exhibition reviews (600–1,000 words)
- Interviews with curators, artists, theorists, and collectors that offer exclusive perspectives (1,000–2,400 words)
- Op-eds and critical essays responding to trends in the art world (1,000–2,500)
Contributor Expectations:
- Submit original, unpublished work tailored to IMPULSE’s tone and editorial mission.
- Be receptive to editorial feedback and open to revision.
- Pitch intentionally—propose stories that align with our ethos and push conversations forward.
- Meet deadlines and maintain timely and professional communication with our editors.
Who Should Apply:
We welcome pitches from both emerging and established writers, including artists, critics, curators, and scholars. A background in art, cultural criticism, and journalism is strongly encouraged.
