Overview:
Goodman Gallery is seeking a highly organized, exceptionally detail-oriented Gallery Manager & Sales Assistant to support the daily operations of our US office and viewing room on the Upper East Side. This dynamic role offers the right candidate the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to both the administrative and commercial success of the gallery. The ideal individual will be proactive, design-savvy, sales-minded, and excited to engage with a global collector base, while supporting an ambitious contemporary program.
This is a growth-oriented role ideal for someone eager to expand their network and client relationships, with potential for increasing responsibility in sales.
Commercial art gallery experience is required.
Key Responsibilities:
Front of House & Administrative Support
- Serve as the professional, welcoming face of the gallery for all visitors and clients
- Manage IT systems, vendor relationships, and general office operations
- Maintain supply inventories and ensure the gallery is clean, stocked, and presentation-ready
- Liaise with landlords, superintendents, and maintenance personnel to keep the space in excellent working order
- Oversee mail, shipments, scheduling, and internal communications
- Record meeting minutes and support gallery directors with calendar and workflow management
- Prepare exhibition checklists, generate work orders and produce expense reports, and coordinate with the accounting department
Inventory Management
- Handle all logistics related to artwork movement, condition reports, and location tracking
- Coordinate with international team members and vendors to manage loans, consignments, and art shipments
- Lead annual stock take and resolve any inventory discrepancies
- Hire and manage freelance art handlers to execute deliveries and installations efficiently
Sales, Client Development & Support
- Support the gallery directors in preparing and executing sales presentations, proposals, and client communications
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of sales materials and documentation (PDFs, images, price lists, etc.)
- Cultivate new client relationships and proactively seek opportunities to expand the gallery’s collector base
- Maintain ongoing relationships with collectors, advisors, and curators
- Represent the gallery during openings, external events, and client visits
- Collaborate with the international sales team to ensure consistent, informed client engagement across locations
Exhibitions, Events & Art Fair Support
- Organize and execute public and private events including openings, performances, talks, and dinners
- Design and produce all event materials, including digital and print invitations, wall texts, labels, and posters
- Oversee guest list creation, RSVPs, and seating arrangements in collaboration with directors
- Coordinate artist travel, hospitality, and logistics for installations or programs
- Maintain up-to-date listings and inventory on Artnet and other online platforms
- Archive install photography, sales materials, and press in an organized and accessible manner
Daily Opening & Closing Procedures:
Morning
- Prepare gallery space (cleaning, stocking, updating printed materials and digital content)
- Ensure a professional and polished environment for all visitors
End of Day
- Secure artworks, tidy all spaces, and dispose of waste
- Check in with directors for final tasks before closing
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Incredibly detail-oriented, with exceptional organizational and follow-through abilities
- Strong sales instincts and a desire to grow a personal client base within the gallery framework
- Proven ability or strong potential to contribute to sales and client development
- Graphic design proficiency (Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign & Photoshop)
- Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in a gallery, museum, or arts organization preferred
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Comfort working across time zones as part of a collaborative global team
- Professional demeanor and experience in client-facing settings
- Familiarity with Filemaker, Google Suite, Mac OS, Artnet, and similar systems
- Interest and knowledge of contemporary African art or the broader African diaspora is a strong plus
- Deep interest in contemporary art and artist-centered programming
