Description

Print Center New York seeks its next Executive Director to lead the nonprofit exhibition space at a pivotal moment in the organization’s history. Through exhibitions, publications, public engagement, and artistic development, Print Center New York explores printmaking as an art form that drives invention and collaboration. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the new Executive Director (“ED”) will leverage a small team of dedicated staff and external consultants to steer the next chapter of the organization's growth, scaling its operations and fund development to deepen its long-term sustainability as it enters its fourth year of expanded programming in a new gallery. The incoming ED will be a dynamic, inspirational leader and a successful fundraiser who relishes capacity building, is committed to equitable and sustainable organizational practices, and can articulate a clear vision for how Print Center New York can deepen its impact on the ecosystem of artists, printers, curators, and cultural producers who make printmaking a vital form of expression. 


Key Responsibilities


Organization Mission and Strategy

  • Lead and guide Print Center New York’s artistic vision, in close collaboration with a Chief Curator who directs the development and implementation of the organization’s programming
  • Ensure that all programs, policies, and practices align with Print Center New York’s values and vision and develop a sustainable culture 


Strategic Fundraising Leadership

  • As the organization’s chief fundraiser, develop annual and multi-year fundraising targets and strategies that support Print Center New York’s long-term sustainability, with the support of an Associate Director of Development and a contract grant writer 
  • Steward and expand relationships with existing donors, and develop new relationships and funding pipelines, including individual giving, foundations, and corporate support 
  • Lead major gift cultivation and solicitation
  • Oversee staff in achieving earned income derived from retail merchandising and benefit prints
  • Lead Board and staff in developing an organizational culture of philanthropy


Financial Management 

  • Collaborate with the Board Chair and Board Treasurer to oversee the organization’s fiscal health, monitoring revenue, expenses, cash flow, and cash balances in collaboration with an external accounting firm
  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget and oversee long-term planning, ensuring that resources are properly managed and building financial resilience 
  • Ensure that appropriate financial controls, best practices, and reporting systems are in place
  • Oversee and align all financial operations, and oversee the annual audit, with the support of an external accounting firm and a general assistant


Human Resources, Operations, and Administration

  • Develop and adequately scale an effective organizational staffing structure to meet programmatic goals and operational needs 
  • Recruit, hire, and manage staff and consultants, ensuring individual responsibilities and accountabilities are clearly defined, delegated, and evaluated
  • Build a positive and collaborative team environment through ongoing direction, support, communication, and professional development 
  • Manage HR functions, including onboarding of staff, administering benefits, and ensuring compliance with labor laws and best practices 
  • Oversee facility’s needs, insurance procurement, and organizational compliance, supported by a general assistant 


Board Collaboration and Governance 

  • Act as the primary liaison between the organization and the Board and its committees, aligning operations with the organization’s strategic direction
  • Provide regular, transparent reporting on program delivery, financial health, and strategic milestones
  • Collaborate with existing Board members to cultivate new members and support strategies for strong Board member development and growth 


Communications and External Affairs

  • Act as the primary ambassador for Print Center New York to a diverse range of stakeholders, including printmaking and arts communities, dealers and collectors, donors, community collaborators, public, and media
  • Lead staff, consultants, and Board in implementation of the organization’s storytelling, marketing, and communications strategies 
  • Be a visible and engaged participant in New York City’s cultural life, with an emphasis on sustaining and expanding the organization's relationships with artists and the broader arts and culture community


Requirements 


The successful candidate must demonstrate leadership and organizational skills, financial acumen, and enthusiasm for guiding an artistically ambitious organization. Prior management experience at a not-for-profit visual arts institution or organization required. An advanced degree in a relevant field is preferred. 


In addition, the following are highly desired:

  • Demonstrated success leading fundraising efforts and cultivating and soliciting donors  
  • Supervisory, personnel management, and mentoring experience  
  • Demonstrated ability to make timely decisions and move projects forward 
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills  
  • Experience working with Boards of Directors  
  • Familiarity with, and contacts in, the cultural and artistic communities of New York and beyond  
  • Strong social skills and the ability to set the tone and lead in community relations  
  • Financial competence, including experience preparing budgets and long-range financial plans  
  • Comfort and experience with public speaking, storytelling, and marketing strategy 
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and strategically  
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously  
  • Dedication, discipline, ambition, and the ability to translate vision into programming and concrete achievements  
  • Maturity, confidence, and openness  
  • A hands-on work ethic, a positive outlook, and a collaborative spirit 



Compensation


Salary Range: $140-$160K
