Communications Coordinator

$60,000 - $75,000 per annum depending on experience, 40 hours per week

Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Forge Project is looking to hire a Communications Coordinator to support public relations and communications projects that foreground Indigenous perspectives. The Communications Coordinator role at Forge Project is responsible for building media relationships, managing social-media channels, and maintaining Forge Project’s brand identity through strong graphic design across all departments at the organization. They will also support fundraising efforts and marketing campaigns to extend the reach of the organization. The ideal candidate will have two to three years experience in writing for a variety of platforms—including tribal newspapers and grassroots organizations, for example—building press relationships, and digital design, and looking to use or expand their skill set by making work in a variety of styles and mediums with a clear voice.


ABOUT FORGE PROJECT 

Forge Project is a Native-led non-profit organization whose mandate is to cultivate and advance Indigenous leadership in arts and culture. We are guided by the leadership of the Indigenous Steering Council, the Board of Directors, Executive Director and Chief Curator Candice Hopkins (Citizen of Carcross/Tagish First Nation), and Director of Indigenous Programs and Relationality Sarah Biscarra Dilley (yaktitʸutitʸu yaktiłhini [Northern Chumash]).


LOCATION

This is a hybrid position, with flexible in-person schedule, located near Taghkanic, New York (not accessible by public transportation). Forge is located on the unceded, traditional and ancestral lands of the Moh-He-Con-Nuck, The Peoples of the Waters that Are Never Still. Today the Moh-He-Con-Nuck reside in Wisconsin and are known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans. Further details on working conditions below.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications

  1. Maintain Forge Project’s email audiences
  2. Maintain newsletter strategy
  3. Research and write monthly email newsletters on relevant topics
  4. Devise newsletter collaborations
  5. Work with leadership on topic, collaborators, and scope of work
  6. Develop contracts and maintain correspondence with collaborators
  7. Maintain Forge Project website
  8. Work with programming department to upload upcoming events
  9. Add press links to Resources page
  10. Upload Vimeo recordings to Videos page
  11. Work with Development department to maintain Fundraising campaign pages
  12. Work with all departments to update information on all pages


Social media management

  1. Schedule and maintain social-media posts weekly, with an emphasis on strong branding and consistent aesthetic
  2. Design and post upcoming event promotion whenever needed
  3. Design and post fundraising campaigns
  4. Respond to direct messages and create conversations when appropriate
  5. Develop new channels, including Bluesky
  6. Devise social-media collaborations
  7. Work with leadership on topic, collaborators, and scope of work
  8. Develop contracts and maintain correspondence with collaborators
  9. Maintain Forge Vimeo account
  10. Upload Vimeo links of in-person talks and Zoom events
  11. Share recent Forge press
  12. Manage additions to Linktree


Marketing

  1. Work with Programming department to develop event descriptions
  2. Add event details to Eventbrite and Programming page
  3. Design, print, and distribute marketing materials for events
  4. Communicate to attendees, including safety guidelines and directions
  5. Run and manage Instagram livestream as needed
  6. Photograph events as needed, or work with photographers and videographers to maintain programming archives
  7. Upload and market past event recordings


Public relations

  1. Draft press releases for news, public programming, and events
  2. Work with Forge team to coordinate photos and quotes
  3. Distribute to local and national outlets
  4. Coordinate any follow-ups for coverage
  5. Develop and maintain press relationships
  6. Host writers and journalists at Forge or off-site events as needed
  7. Coordinate interviews, quotes, or radio and television appearances for Forge staff, Fellows, artists and programming participants
  8. Maintain press photos, coordinate up-to-date photographs of site and events
  9. Obtain photo permissions as needed


Branding & design

  1. Use social media templates to produce posts and digital assets
  2. Collaborate with designers, artists, partner collaborators, and departments to promote Forge Project brand
  3. Co-develop, coordinate, and produce merchandise such as postcards, hats, and tote bags
  4. Coordinate and manage point-of-sale merchandising
  5. Work with Development department to design fundraising materials such as social-media assets and campaign one-pagers
  6. Design print and digital advertising for local and national outlets


THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL BE 

A person who has writing, social media, and design experience and a passion for furthering social justice in the context of contemporary Native art and culture. An ideal candidate is comfortable communicating to multiple audiences, online and in-person. Someone who enjoys working as part of a team, in a responsive and collaborative environment, and is comfortable with both in-person and remote settings. 


QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS NEEDED

  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong writing and copy editing skills
  • Task management and self-directed in setting priorities 
  • Deep knowledge of Native American and Indigenous communities, histories, and current events
  • Familiarity with contemporary art and culture
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills

  • Candidate must be based in the Mahicannituck (Hudson River) Valley region,​​ have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for regular use. Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States


WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Forge Project is located in a rural area with no public transportation. The offices and shared spaces are not currently fully ADA accessible and include unpaved pathways and stairs.
  • Forge will make every effort to provide accommodations as needed.
  • Forge’s work space includes sitting desks, a semi-private office, and informal meeting spaces.
  • This position requires occasional evening and weekend availability to accommodate the events and programs schedule.
