The Art Effect seeks a dynamic, professional, and creative camp director for summer programs, Dutchess Arts Camp in Poughkeepsie, NY and Ulster Arts Camp in New Paltz, NY. Our Arts Camps provide weekly, themed summer sessions for ages 5 – 11 where children can explore their artistic abilities and express themselves through creative group and individual activities. This year's Dutchess Arts Camp is taking place at Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, NY from June 30th-July 25th. Ulster Arts Camp will be taking place on the SUNY New Paltz campus in New Paltz, NY from July 28th-August 1st. These programs run from 9am-4pm; early drop off begins at 8:30 and late pick-up ends at 4:45.
Responsibilities of Summer Arts Camp Director include:
● Managing a staff (between 5-25 depending on location) of teaching artists, group counselors, and counselors in training;
● Reviewing applications and conducting interviews for counselors and counselors in training;
● Organizing, implementing, and emceeing a weekly culminating performance and art exhibit emblematic of the overarching theme;
● Maintaining clear and consistent communication with The Art Effect staff, camp staff, and parents/guardians;
● Maintaining/monitoring quality of camp instruction, cleanliness of spaces, and professional environment;
● Leading set up, clean up, move-in and move-out of camp spaces;
● Coordinating with The Art Effect staff on material inventory, lesson plan overview, and researching/recruiting teaching artists as needed.
● Supervising early drop off and late dismissal;
The successful candidate will:
● Have a background in visual arts, performing arts, music, and/or digital media;
● Have experience managing multiple staff members and overseeing program implementation;
● Have good communication skills and record keeping/organizational skills;
● Have working knowledge and experience with Google Sheets, Docs, Presentations, etc;
● Be energetic, animated, and engaging to keep campers interest level up and camp staff motivated;
● Be able to successfully coach teaching artists, teaching assistants, and CIT’s towards organizational standards;
● Be able to ensure that teaching artists’ lessons meet organizational standards, weekly program goals, and are developmentally appropriate for each age group;
● Be able to make decisions quickly and efficiently;
● Be able to delegate and effectively manage staff;
● Be able to establish and maintain a safe environment for campers and staff
● Have access to a vehicle
Degree in Education preferred. CPR/AED/First Aid certification preferred or willingness to certify. Supervisory experience, experience teaching, and/or working with children ages 5-11 required.
Camp Director reports to Hanna Rose DeMarco, Director of Artistic Advancement. This is a seasonal, hourly position that begins in March, includes program planning and training dates in June and program delivery dates in July and August, and concludes with wrap-up/reporting in mid-to-late August. Specific start and end dates will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
Hourly rate ranges from $30-$40 an hour. Pay will be negotiated upon hire and will be commensurate with experience.
