Position Overview

Newel is seeking a detail oriented Cataloger / Consignment Manager to join our team in Long Island City. This person will help manage consignor relationships, edit and organize incoming item lists, coordinate intake information, and support the cataloging team with accurate item descriptions, measurements, condition notes, research, and documentation.

This role is ideal for someone who is organized, communicative, and comfortable working with both clients and physical inventory. The right candidate should have a strong interest in antiques, decorative arts, fine art, furniture, jewelry, fashion, or auction cataloging, and should be able to work closely with consignors as well as internal team members.


Key Responsibilities

Consignor Management

  1. Communicate with consignors throughout the intake and cataloging process.
  2. Help consignors organize and edit item lists, photos, descriptions, and supporting information.
  3. Follow up with consignors to gather missing details, provenance, measurements, condition information, and background.
  4. Maintain clear records of consignor communication, item status, and next steps.
  5. Help make the consignment process organized, professional, and efficient.

Cataloging Support

  1. Assist with cataloging antiques, decorative arts, furniture, fine art, fashion, jewelry, and collectibles.
  2. Record key item details including measurements, maker, period, materials, condition, provenance, and other relevant information.
  3. Support the cataloging team with research, description writing, and database updates.
  4. Help prepare accurate listings for Newel Auctions, Newel retail sales, and internal inventory systems.
  5. Review item information for accuracy, consistency, and completeness before publication or sale.

Inventory Intake and Organization

  1. Help manage the flow of incoming consignment inventory.
  2. Coordinate with photography, warehouse, auction, and sales teams to make sure items are properly tracked.
  3. Organize item lists, spreadsheets, photos, and supporting documents.
  4. Help identify missing information or inconsistencies in intake files.
  5. Maintain a clean and reliable process from initial consignor submission through cataloging.

Auction and Sales Support

  1. Assist in preparing items for auction, online listings, and retail presentation.
  2. Help verify catalog descriptions, condition notes, and consignor information.
  3. Support internal teams with item research and auction preparation.
  4. Help ensure deadlines are met for upcoming sales, auctions, and inventory launches.


Qualifications

Required

  1. Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage many items at once.
  4. Interest in antiques, decorative arts, furniture, fine art, fashion, jewelry, or auctions.
  5. Comfort working directly with consignors and internal team members.
  6. Ability to work on site in Long Island City.
  7. Basic comfort with spreadsheets, databases, email, and digital file organization.

Preferred

  1. Experience in an auction house, gallery, antiques business, consignment business, museum, estate company, or luxury resale environment.
  2. Experience writing or editing item descriptions.
  3. Familiarity with cataloging, inventory systems, or auction platforms.
  4. Ability to identify periods, styles, makers, materials, and condition issues.
  5. Art history, design history, decorative arts, fashion, jewelry, or related background.
