Jack Shainman Gallery seeks a qualified full-time permanent Art Handler/Preparator for a Tuesday through Saturday schedule.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to best practice art handling involving art and material culture spanning antiquity to present with an emphasis on contemporary art in all media. Strongest candidates demonstrate outstanding personal rigor and professional expertise caring for and safeguarding artworks, as well the ability to discern appropriate means and methods to perform all expected tasks.
Additionally, assistance maintaining gallery’s front facing and back of house appearances, installations and storages is required. Oftentimes, this includes housekeeping and repairs, proactively identifying issues throughout the gallery’s physical plant, accurately, quickly, and comfortably communicating with colleagues. Comfortability working directly with artists and studios for artwork collections or installations and communicating with clients as needed. Familiarity with light construction, applicable hand and power tools, interior wall, floor, and lighting maintenance is integral to the position. Also, it is frequently necessary to work responsibly on ladders and scaffolding and to be able to safely lift 50 lbs., or more with a partner. Familiarity with gallery and museum-standard packing, crating, handling, and installation methods. Understanding and ability to work additional hours beyond the standard Tuesday-Saturday schedule, depending on project-specific requirements, including additional weekend, late night, or early morning hours. Ability to work at off-site storage locations as needed.
Professional appearance and demeanor with colleagues and art world professionals is expected without exception. A high level of comfort with administrative work, database entry, condition reporting, shipping, and storage is also required. Platforms necessary for successful job performance include Art Base, ArtLogic, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, and Mondays. Candidates should have minimum two years professional gallery, museum, or comparable art handling experience, as this is not an entry-level position.
