About the Position:

Appraiser & Sale Specialist in the New York based Rare Books, Autographs, Maps; Photographs; Stage & Screen Department. The role entails all aspects of the management of the business of the Department including appraising, estimating, securing and cataloguing property for auction and private sales. The role also entails working with the Department Head on budgets for the auctions, creation of marketing materials, and promotion of the auctions and the auction house. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Head of Department and colleagues to create and meet the annual operating plan
  • Estimate and catalogue property for Rare Books, Autographs, Maps; Photographs; Stage & Screen; and interdisciplinary auctions 
  • Engage in proposal writing, strategy meetings, and other aspects of competitive business getting
  • Conduct regular fair market value/estate tax appraisals as a member of Trusts and Estates team and prepare appraisal documents to USPAP standards 
  • Interact with Marketing Department to create unified marketing and press campaigns
  • Provide accurate condition reports and arrange and oversee all department exhibitions throughout the year including approximately 2-4 weekends per year 
  • Negotiate sale terms, explain the auction process and procedures, and provide service to clients throughout the sale process, both for auction and private sales
  • Assist in resolving post-sale issues
  • Assist with department telephone/internet inquiries
  • Assist with live auctions
  • Continually build and expand own specialist expertise and connoisseurship

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s and/or advanced degree required
  • Expertise in rare books and manuscripts, with experience either in an auction house, institutional, or dealer setting
  • Proficiency in a second language, particularly French, preferred
  • Expertise in the fields of early printing, foreign language, literature, and cartography preferred
  • Self-starter, multi-tasker with proven ability to initiate business
  • A team player with excellent communication skills
  • Organized, thorough, focused, with a passion for and commitment to the field
  • Professional and discreet client service skills
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain composure and meet deadlines
